HOUSE: Newburgh

Frustration.

The Citristrip is not working. The Peel-Away 7 is not working.

The paint is gone, but after three applications of the above products, the brown mastic (it’s 1/4″ thick, and rock hard) just is not budging. I honestly do not know what else to try.

Maybe it’s time to consider replacing the beadboard. Sigh…

Have you tried a heatgun? It’s my favorite paint remover 😉 I haven’t read back in your archives so maybe you’ve already tried that though.

We stripped some beadboard in our dining room only to find that it was cruddy pine and took stain in a very blotchy way. If I had to do it over again, I would have saved myself alot of time and faux wood-grained it or something.

    Thanks, Mindy!

I don’t like to use a heat gun with lead paint (which is surely what’s on there), and because the mastic most likely contains asbestos, I really don’t want to try anything other than wet removal. There’s actually an area on the beadboard where someone previously tried to remove the mastic with either a heat gun or a blowtorch. I can tell because the wall around the mastic is charred black…but the mastic is still there!

The paint actually isn’t a problem at all. The Citristrip and Peel Away both took that off, but the mastic is still holding strong. Even though this beadboard is oak, unpainted woodwork isn’t my style, so I’ll definitely be repainting it white — if I can get the mastic off, that is!! 🙂

I located a product called “bean-e-doo” which is a soy based non-toxic solvent that is designed to remove black mastic. I have not yet tried it, ‘cos we’re not yet ready to pull up all the carpet and strip the mastic from the concrete subfloor, but have read some comments from people that it does work.. you could do an internet search and find out who carries it near where you live…

Thanks, Alison!! I will most definitely look into that!!

Alison, I just looked it up, and it says “BEAN-e-doo Mastic Remover is not recommended for wood surfaces”. So…too bad for me (the beadboard is wood, of course), but I hope it works for you on the concrete!
