“Wells” sofa from Room & Board.

Wells sofa from Room & Board

Hmmm. Another contender in SofaQuest 2007? We went to the store and sat in it last night, and it is really super comfy. I worry about the quality of the leather, though (it seemed thin, but maybe it’s just really soft?), and I’m not in love with the legs. We have a dark floor, though, so it’s possible the legs would get lost visually anyway. Hmmm. I would definitely look good with the new chairs. I do love the stock color’s name, “Ambassador Camel”. Hee.

I like this one a lot. I think it would go nice in your livingroom.

I love your taste in everything. I have serious dressing room envy. Can I vote no on the sofa though? How is it for laying down?

This coming from someone who made a seriously expensive error in sofa judgment …

M: It’s excellent for laying down…we tried that in the store! It’s 101″ long, so we can both stretch out on either end at the same time.

What’s your reason for the no vote?! I have to know! I am terrified of making seriously expensive errors in sofa judgement!!

This is the sofa that I am considering getting, actually the sofa and chair set in ebony. It is from JC Penney, but that is all I can afford right now. I would drive an hour and a half to get one from IKEA, but I have no way to get it home.

Adam, if I lived near you, I would totally buy this and have it steam-cleaned!! It’s pretty much exactly what I want. Sigh.

Be careful with that JCP sofa, it’s not real leather, it’s a polyester-leather blend (I didn’t even know such a thing existed)…I’m suspicious. Have you seen it in person?

Check out Room & Board. They have some very affordable sofas in lots of styles, and they’ll deliver unlimited furniture to Potsdam for $200. Not bad!

My seriously expensive error in sofa judgment came because I was seduced by this down-filled, leather-clad sectional hussy from Macy’s. Which ended up being totally the wrong scale for the layout of my weird little Victorian house. It really is the most comfortable piece of furniture ever, but every time I look at it I seriously consider setting it on fire. I moved it into the “cave”–the office room where my sons and husband have free reign to be slobs and play video games, and bought this cheap little faux leather Parisian apartment sofa from Cost Plus. It’s perfect. The dog perches on top and growls at passersby.

If you guys can both lay down on it and it’s comfy–go for it. You don’t know how comfy something is just from a picture.

I feel your beadboard pain. We have it in our upstairs bath, and I love it. It’s my happy room. Don’t discount the prefab stuff though–well-painted, and you can’t tell that it’s not original.

Anna, I have not seen it person, I wish there was one nearby so I could. I did do some online research about the type of leather, and new it was a blend, and it is said to be very durable. Plus I figured I was being “eco-friendly” by buying something hat used recycled leather. Maybe I am being stupid though, I will have to do some more research. I’m working with a pretty tight budget, so if this doesn’t pan out I might have to put it on the back burner. I really like that velvet sofa, and if it weren’t for the whole pet hair thing, I would be all over it!

I guess after doing some research, bonded leather is not such a great thing, so I think I will steer clear of it! Now to start looking again, I am off to the IKEA website!

Ughh, now I am not sure again! I am so damn wishy washy!!!

Adam, we’re going to IKEA on Saturday, do you want me to test-sit anything for you?? We also have Macys and JCP near here, and of course I can easily go to any of the furniture stores in the city. I’m more than happy to check stuff out for you in person and report back! Really!

  12. Adam September 28th, 2007 8:54 am

Anna, thank you so much! Would you mind test sitting the Kramfors and Arild sofas for me? Those two seem pretty good, although the Kramfors is made with “split leather”, which apparently isn’t very durable either. From the research I did, top grain leather is the most durable and long lasting. My current furniture has lasted me 7 years, and I would hate to buy something that would not last me at least as long.

  13. Anna at D16 September 28th, 2007 9:35 am

I can tell you already that the Kramfors is not very comfortable in leather, and the look is weird — too shiny, almost plasticky. The Arild is very nice looking and definitely the more comfortable of the two, and the leather is slightly pebbled, which is probably better with pets/claws.

We’ve had our IKEA sofa for 5 years, and it would still be perfectly fine if we hadn’t moved so many times. It could be easily repaired, though. Honestly, it still looks and feels brand new, but since it’s a sectional it really doesn’t work in our current living room. I stand by their sofas, though, at least the more expensive ones.

Have you seen the Stockholm in leather? It’s really beautiful (looks more brown than black in person), and very comfortable. Probably the best quality sofa I’ve seen in that price range, too. I have no problem believing it would hold up for 15+ years, at least. I’ve never looked at the construction of the Arild underneath, but I’ll flip it over tomorrow and investigate. :)

Adam, what style of sofa are you looking for? I’ve been thinking you want something American/traditional, but that’s just because of the JCP link — is that what you want, that kind of look? Let me know, I’m happy to do some poking around online to see if I can find some deals.

    There’s this…

Anna, I really like the Stockholm a lot, I would definitely consider it, I would just have to save up a little more money. I trust your opinion of their quality, as I know you have owned a lot of IKEA merchandise. To be honest, I was kind of settling for the JC Penney one because of the price, which is a bad thing to do. I have decided that the bonded leather is not good quality, so I will wait to put aside a little more money. The style I am looking for is something streamlined and modern, but not too modern, as I don’t think it would go with my house. I hate anything too puffy or overstuffed, which is what most of the furniture stores close to me offer. I do kind of like the one you sent me a link to on Craigslist, I may have to investigate that further. Thank you so much for helping me out with this!

  16. Adam September 28th, 2007 10:19 am

Oh, and I would also like something that has a matching chair, although that is not a necessity! Lord I am fussy!

  17. Adam September 28th, 2007 10:29 am

Have you seen this sofa? It is so beautiful! Way out of my price range though. :(

  18. Anna at D16 September 28th, 2007 3:10 pm

Oh, I know!! It’s incredibly gorgeous, but totally impractical and not very comfortable, either.

Seriously, save up a little more money and get exactly what you want for however much you’re willing to spend. We’re trying to be really careful about what we buy, because we don’t want to replace it in 5 or 10 years (or longer). I dream of owning a sofa that I could pass down to my kids (OK, maybe Bruno doesn’t need a sofa, but you know what I mean), but I’ll settle for it getting me through my 40’s. :)

    Agreed!
