The first kitchen (with the tiled counter tops) is really beautiful! Your kitchen looks beautiful! You should maybe do an accent wall of red since you like it so much...that way, you get your fix of red without going overboard. Maybe you could even do a tiled red like in the first kitchen ;)

I've always liked tiled countertops too. But anti-tiled countertop people say that they are 1) harder to clean (than a smooth surface) 2) trap nasty things like e-coli (etc) in the grout. I would assume that if you took care of the countertops (cleaning them well and sealing the grout/tile habitually) that they would be fine.

I had a tiled countertop in a previous rental. Aesthetically speaking it was quite charming (small hexagonal white tiles) but I do have to say that it never really felt all that CLEAN. I scrub the grout in our tiled shower once a week and I don't fancy doing it even more often in a kitchen, where a clean countertop is much more of a hygiene issue. My two cents!

I love Colin and Justin too, they are hilarious. I don't always agree with their design decisions but they take some interesting risks sometimes that often pay off.

I think tiled countertops are visually very nice, but I have known a lot of people who have had difficulty with them holding up over time. Maybe with the new silicon grouts that are available that is no longer much of an issue, I had my tiled entryway done with a silicon grout and it is holding up amazingly!

Dianne, HGTV in the US does not show Home Heist!! I have to watch HNTD on BBC America, we are totally devoid of other Colin & Justin programming, as far as I know!

(What does "Scts" mean?)

I'm with you on the tiled countertops, I think they're great and they always feel a bit continental to me.

Home Heist (Tuesday 9pm on HGTV) is SERIOSLY funnier than that! The Scts have a rare combo of design flair, comedy timing and theyre both hot too! Watch it once and be hooked. Design tv will all be like this one day. I just registered at hgtv.ca/castingcall to try and get them over to my place as theyre looking for places to fix up right now. And even beter, they are now living in Toronto I hear!
