HOUSE: Newburgh

Bathroom tiles and paint.

We are making such good progress in the bathroom. It’s very exciting! Sure, the tub and sink are still out being reglazed (after 4 weeks…), but I can look past that and focus on the fact that the room is officially NO LONGER SCARY. I can actually imagine myself taking a bath in there (in a bathtub, of course).

Marble hexagon tiles.

All of our windows are original to the house. This is the first one I’ve repaired and painted.

Ceiling medallion and glass pendant.

Putting the new sash lock on the window felt like a real accomplishment. This is something people do when they’re close to being finished, right?

Where did you get the pendant light?

  • Reply Anna at D16 June 30, 2008 at 12:48 pm

Thanks for all the nice comments, everyone! 🙂 It sure feels great to have an end in sight for this project. Hopefully the electric will be done in a couple of weeks, and then we can put up the wallpaper and get our fixtures installed. Yay!

    To answer some questions…

W-P Zoo: DiP is right, if you have to ask about keeping something clean, you don’t know me. 😉 I’m not too worried. We don’t wear shoes in the house, and this is a 2nd floor bathroom. The grout (and marble) will be sealed, and I vacuum and mop the entire house every week.

Oh, and that’s just a standard-issue Home Depot sash lock, so you too can partake and in the sexiness if you so desire!

amy: The tiles are bevel-less white carrera marble hexagons. We bought ours through Fuda tile in Ramsey, NJ, but I’m sure you can get them elsewhere. Ask at your local tile store. They may be able to special order them even if you don’t see them on display.

  • Reply Anna at D16 June 30, 2008 at 1:00 pm

AAW: The pendant light is the 8″ BASISK from IKEA. It’s sold as a plug-in light, so I had to cut the cord in order to hardwire it.

Do you mind telling me more about your paneling. It is so simple and an excellent fit/contast to the marble floor
    Thanks again

  • Reply Anna at D16 March 22, 2009 at 9:31 pm

Cris, the wainscot is made of tongue-and-groove pine flooring. It’s sold in 8′ lengths, so we just cut each plank in half to make up the 4′ height. Pine flooring is very affordable (we paid about $1 sf) and much thicker than most beadboard (5/8″ vs 3/8″).

  • Reply cris March 25, 2009 at 12:21 am

You are so kind to answer so fast! thanks and I apologize if I missed your previous answer to this. Is the floor honed or polished. my sample from the LA tile store I have is honed but yours looks to have a polish. I had been collecting every assortment of rectified hex ceramic to try and fix our 1907 bath, but When I saw the marble floor and wainscotting it was like “bingo”. I am lucky that so many clever people have gone before me and my sincere thanks to you and your doorsixteen friends!

  • Reply carol July 21, 2009 at 9:06 am

    Just beautiful . . .

What are the paint colors (and brand) you used for the wainscot and the walls? Again, just beautiful.

Also, I’m thinking your marble tile floor is polished, not honed, right?

    Thanks! Be so proud!

  • Reply Kris February 26, 2012 at 11:59 am

Just came across your blog. LOVE your bathroom. I’m shopping around for floor tile and am considering marble hex floor. Can you please share the manufacturer, style number and price/sq foot?

Also curious to hear your experience with tub reglazing. I have an original claw foot tub and am considering reglazing, but am concerned the finish will not be as durable and attractive as the original porcelain.

    THANKS!! Kris in Seattle

    • Anna @ D16 February 26, 2012 at 1:18 pm

Sorry, I don’t have any of that information. We bought it at Fuda Tile in Paramus, NJ several years ago.

We had our tub sandblasted and powder-coated offsite. It’s not the epoxy “reglazing” that you see advertised by tub refinishing companies—it’s a totally different process. Epoxy refinishing is definitely NOT as durable as porcelain, but sanblasting/powder-coating is extremely durable and requires no special care.

  • Reply abbi.a March 12, 2012 at 12:15 am

    just love it!

so you mind sharing the size of the hexagon tiles? and also the height of the beadboard? just love the dimensions. thanks!

    • Anna @ D16 March 12, 2012 at 8:34 am

Thanks! The tiles are 1″, and the wainscoting is roughly 55″ high including the base and cap moldings.

  • Reply andrea April 3, 2012 at 6:38 am

hi anna! your bathroom and blog looks marvelous. i’ve been scouring your blog to see if you say what color grout you ended up using with the marble hex tiles… do you remember? we’re about to put some in and i feel like the grout can make all the difference…

    • Anna @ D16 April 3, 2012 at 10:18 am

      The grout is white.

  • Reply Teri July 27, 2012 at 12:23 pm

    Hi Anna,
I LOOOOVE the marble floor tile, so much that I just bought 1″ marble hex for my own bathroom remodel. I am struggling now with grout color. My marble is venatino rather than carrera, so it has a slightly whiter background, but still looks very much like yours. I am going to choose either white grout, or a very, very light gray (called Frost, by Mapei). How do you feel about your choice of white? How is it holding up in appearance, and would you choose white again if you had it to do over? I am leaning towards the white, because it seems the most classic look with the least attention to the grout lines (which is what I want), but it seems like so many people choose a light gray because they are worried the white will look dirty.

Thank you, and I hope you still answer this, considering my question is three years after your original post!

    Teri

    • Anna @ D16 July 27, 2012 at 12:40 pm

Yes, I’d still go with white. We don’t wear shoes in the house, we don’t have kids, and this is a 2nd-floor bathroom, so it’s really a non-issue in our situation.

    • Teri July 27, 2012 at 2:47 pm

Anna, thanks so much for your prompt reply. Might I trouble you with one more question? I see that Laticrete has two whites — Bright and Antique — and Mapei has two — Avalanche and White. Do you happen to know which you used? Someone told me that I might find the Avalanche too white in contrast to the tile, and I didn’t realize until I checked their color chart online that they have the “White 00,” which on my monitor at least looks a little less bright.

You must love getting all this positive response to your gorgeous bathroom. Great work!

    • Anna @ D16 July 27, 2012 at 4:17 pm

Hi Teri, it’s so long ago now—I really don’t remember. I’m not even sure what brand we used. Sorry!!

  • Reply TERI July 27, 2012 at 4:49 pm

Thanks Anna, that’s OK! I felt silly asking, actually, but you’d have made my day if you happened to remember. I’ll figure it out. 🙂

Hi Anna. I know this post is from ages ago but I need your help! I am renovating my bathroom and I’m thinking of using marble hex tiles. can you tell me what size marble hex tiles you used and whether you used polished or honed tiles. Thanks!
    PS I love your blog.

    • Anna @ D16 August 27, 2012 at 1:12 pm

      Hi, I think they’re 1″, definitely polished.

  • Reply Madie August 27, 2012 at 7:31 pm

Thanks Anna for the response. One other question: did you have the grout and hex tiles sealed? if yes do you remember the name of the sealant/type of sealant?

    • Anna @ D16 August 27, 2012 at 9:00 pm

I did seal the tile and grout, but I don’t remember the brand, sorry—it was four years ago.

  • Reply Fiona April 10, 2014 at 8:37 am

    Hi Anna.

I don’t think you use this bathroom that much for actual bathing (if I remember correctly), but like everyone else I love, love, love your tiles.

Have you had any problem with them discoloring? I’ve read that white marble can sometimes react with water to turn yellow-ish.

    Thanks!

    • Anna @ D16 April 10, 2014 at 9:50 am

No, not at all—or at least not that I can detect! I can’t say it would bother me, though. That kind of thing is just part of the aging process of natural materials.
