Best of luck with the silicone caulking, or whichever caulk you use. It's the one job that I hate. I had to caulk some skirting last year and I still have nightmares about how much smoother it could look.

I read a great hint on how to get a neat finish from caulk. It was in a DIY book. Place masking tape a few mm from the edge you are sealing. When the caluk/sealant has been applied and smoothed with a wet spoon, take up the tape for a neat edge.

Well, Anna... this is all your fault. I see your bathroom and think, "My bathroom is blah. I haven't done anything but hang a shower curtain since we moved in."

I have been so busy restoring the other rooms.

So, I get this wild hair to pull up the vinyl floor, so I can paint the subfloor a pretty glossy aqua-blue, paint the walls a heavy cream, and the trim a bright white. Just as an interim fix until we can afford the hex and clawfoot and all that.

Hours later, we located a TON of water damage, mold, vast grossness. And I won't have a toilet for awhile. (I will have to brave using my sons' toilet. Gross!)

I blame you. I really do. Witness the carnage here:

wendy: No, we didn't remove the tub. The backerboard isn't actually supposed to touch the tub at all, though -- it should stop about 1/4" from the edge of the tub. You don't want to run it behind the tub or anything. The tiles overlap the edge of the backerboard slightly, and run about 1/8" from the edge of the tub. That gap gets caulked. Again, you don't want the tiles to actually touch the tub at all. Gaps are necessary for expansion!

I think it makes us feel good to live in a space we like. It's like a candy for the eyes, or a good book for the soul. I like the white floor.

It looks fantastic. I have the exact same tub with the Art Deco detailing. Can I ask you how you demo'd around the existing tub. Wasn't it hard to install the backer board and tiles with the tub in place? This is exactly what I'd like to do in my bathroom but I thought the tub would need to be removed for access. DId you remove the tub and then put it back?

may a offer you a "you go, girl"? there is no way in hell I would attempt to retile my own bathroom (but then again, I can barely hang a picture on the wall successfully). I am way impressed!

I wish I had seen these pics before we did our subway tiles in the kitchen. Your edges are perfectly finished. I feel like a total dork for not doing mine like this...maybe I can talk my husband into re-doing it.
