Four Legs + HOUSE: Newburgh + Scavenging

I’m back!

I can’t believe it’s been almost a month since I made a real post. I just needed a break. I’m eternally behind on emails, projects, sleep…everything. I can’t say I’m any more caught up now than I was four weeks ago, but sometimes you just need to have one less thing to think about.

Anyway, Fritz here would like to welcome you (and me) back, and show off one of our newly reupholstered chairs. He would also like to mention that he has not chewed on the new fabric at all—not even a tiny taste.

This is one of the two chairs we bought almost two years ago (!) and “temporarily” wrapped in linen with plans to have new cushions made. It sure took us long enough, but I love the new fabric SO MUCH. We had a local upholsterer do the work. For all four cushions (two chairs), it only cost $200 for the foam to be re-wrapped and new, zippered covers made with flat seams. The fabric is a commercial-grade Maharam wool blend, which we bought at an enormous discount from Modern Fabrics. I cannot recommend them enough as a resource—excellent customer service, great prices, and a pretty amazing selection of high-end remnants.

Wow, I had been trying to find a gray upholstery fabric just like this for a midcentury teak chair that I bought last month. Unfortunately I wasn’t finding what I wanted and got impatient and bought something else which, while I like it, I like this even more! To translate my rambling…your chair looks great (and I wish I’d seen the fabric source recommendation a little sooner!).

Wow – love your chairs. And I’m so glad that you’re back!

We recently got an older teak chair, with wool plaid cushions with the same palette as Reese’s Pieces. In other words, we’re planning on re-doing them. The foam is in decent shape, but it’s old and yellowed. I’m curious about your foam – and, generally, if you have any advice on when to keep and when to toss foam inserts.

  • Reply Anna at D16 August 4, 2009 at 1:26 pm

Kristen, the upholsterer told us the foam was fine (despite being old) and didn’t need to be replaced. She just wrapped it in new batting. Replacing the foam would have doubled the cost!

  • Reply becky August 4, 2009 at 1:48 pm

Becky & Mia: I think the bolt of fabric is 54″ wide, and each cushion required about a yard. I would err on the side of having extra, though — plan on 3 yards for 2 cushions.

Jess: I’ll have photos soon. 🙂
