Inspiring Interiors

A little bit of orange.

I’m not a huge fan of orange, but I do like it when it’s a bit on the red side—particularly when paired with grays.

I have orange numbers on my house. These were designed by Erik Speikermann for DWR in 2006. Unfortunately, they have since been discontinued.

From LivingEtc. I know, this is pretty much heaven. See what that purple velvet chair has going on with the burnt-orange leather sofa? They’re going to run off into the sunset and get married, I know it.

Uh, where do I start? The crooked floorboards, the glossy gray paneled walls, the ceiling, the chairs, the sideboard—WOW. But you know it’s the orange lamps (yes, plural—see what’s going on in that back bedroom?) that make it. From ShootFactory.

Okay, the polar bear rug is a bit much, but shamone. LOOK AT THE ORANGE CHAIRS. Again, they totally make the room. Panton chairs really are at their best when they’re allowed to just chill out on the sidelines. And that orange striped rug in the next room over?! Oh, yes please. Both photos are from Sköna hem.

This photo was styled by Sofie Andersson (found via Nestled In). The orange pillow is so fabulous that I can forgive whatever that weird rickrack situation is going in over on the right.

Eames Red-Orange is one of my favorite shades, but I don’t own a shell chair in this color (yet). I love how it looks with the white walls and the wood bench—and how it picks up the orange detail in the pottery. Lovely. Photo by Roland Bello.

I know, that’s right on the verge of being red, but let’s call it orange because it’s too perfect to leave out of this post. From LivingEtc. (Jenna Lyons, why are you so perfect? Also, WHY ARE MY BEDROOM WALLS NOT BLACK?)

p.s. If you happen to have a spare copy of the September issue of LivingEtc lying around, I would LOVE to buy it from you. For some reason, my regular magazine shop never got that issue in, and I missed it. That’s the first issue of LivingEtc I’ve missed in YEARS, and it’s one that I’d really really really like to have. attygreen13, you are awesome!!

p.p.s. If we met at the Remodelista party on Friday, speak up and say HELLO!

    Jenna Lyons bedding is perfect!
I love the oranges that have red in them also-not too citrusy!

  • Reply Audrie September 28, 2009 at 4:44 pm

I have to agree with you… a little orange is fine but too much is just a no-no. Love it with the grey, and love your house numbers!

  • Reply belinda September 28, 2009 at 4:46 pm

if i had the september issue i would let you have it. i am currently fawning all over the october issue that my sister just brought over from the homeland with her. it’s got some wonderful things in it.
i also have a soft spot for orange but it also has to be the ‘right’ orange.

  • Reply Macy September 28, 2009 at 5:04 pm

Hahah “rickrack situation”. Hilarious. And I totally feel ya.

  • Reply attygreen13 September 28, 2009 at 5:15 pm

my B&N still had a few old copies of Sept alongside the new issue – want me to grab one for you and mail it?

  • Reply Erin September 28, 2009 at 5:18 pm

Oh yes! I love reddish-orange and grey together. I have been meaning for months to paint my hallway grey and my laundry nook bright orange, so that when you’re walking down the hall it’s grey, grey, grey, and then… BAM! Laundry nook!

I loved Jenna Lyons bedroom (and bathroom ). Her use of the tattered threadbare rugs won me over.

I love all the rooms posted here. And yeah…jenna lyons’ home…yeah. I just painted more walls black though (BM chalkboard paint which I’m a little too obsessed with at the moment). Love it.

Let me be the 50th person to say I love your house numbers. Maybe it’s because I’m into type generally… but it seems like numbers on a house can really sway a look one way or the other. A not-so-modern house can suddenly look fresh with a set of unexpected, clean sans serifs over the front door.

  • Reply Teresa September 28, 2009 at 6:42 pm

I use a nice descriptive name for that red/orange “paprika”.

  • Reply Averill September 28, 2009 at 7:39 pm

Gorgeous inspiration photos — I’m not a big orange person myself but just a bit as an accent can be SO gorgeous.

  • Reply abbi September 28, 2009 at 7:57 pm

Totally agree about the orange…I painted an accent wall orange in my dining room….loved the paint chip…horrible on the wall and just way too much. So I painted the whole room light grey and got a big circular rug with orange and white swirls…sooo much better.

Love the house numbers and the sunset furniture too!

I personally love orange. We have a set of six orange Eames side chairs and an red-orange arm chair. I love that Roland Bello shot. And the Living, Etc. one.

you find the most fab things. love.it.all. but especially the black walls? hi, when can i own a home of my own?
is that black near the toucan black you have happening in your house? or not purple enough (at all)?

and i love that tiny corner with the eames chair, but especially that great pottery against the white wood.

Thanks for the great orange pix!

At a summer flea market, an antique dealer said to me: Orange is the new black! I never used orange anywhere in my home or previous apartments.

Two years ago, we found a DWR Min bedframe for my teen (at the NJ outlet) for $99! Top it with a nice IKEA mattress …. and voila … it’s heaven! Her walls are painted pale sky blue. Looks awesome with the orange Min!

I love your choices! That orange leather sofa is to die for and I love the orange pendant in the grey room. I love orange as an accent color.

  • Reply heather September 29, 2009 at 10:21 am

I’m kind of a huge fan of orange – but t’s not something I say that often anymore. My father-in-law once decided that it was my favoritecolor and for years, I received many orange presents and constant comments like,”hey, the ferry is orange!”
Jenna Lyons has my favorite Mouille light fixture and an amazing house – so envious.

  • Reply heather September 29, 2009 at 12:58 pm

I just came by to see these photos bigger and now I see I really shouldn’t type on my phone in the morning. Favoritecolor should be a word though.

Not related to this post at all, but I notice that Decor8 has deleted all “How much did this room cost?” posts, including your beautiful and painstaking bathroom redo. Is there any chance you can get that post back from her and add it to your own site? (Like you don’t have enough to do!) All of your careful detailing of expenses would be extremely helpful to those of budgeting our own bathroom overhauls.

Also, I just want to say, I’m delighted that you’re posting again! Yay for D16.

  • Reply ej718 September 29, 2009 at 5:23 pm

Oh phooo! It’s back on Decor8. Please ignore (and delete?) my comment above! I swear, it wasn’t there for a while.

ej718: Some time ago, Holly lost all of the content from her blog and had to re-import ALL of the posts. In the process, she lost all of the comments — but the post is stil here:
    http://decor8blog.com/2009/04/03/how-much-for-this-room-9/

Unfortunately, there are a bunch of confusing typos in the price breakdown, so at some point I should probably do a post about it here just for reference.

Things I love about this post:
    1. Orange
    2. The Peace sign decor in the 6th picture

Is there a way to subscribe to LivingEtc. without paying $130 a year in the U.S.?

  • Reply Anna at D16 September 30, 2009 at 4:55 pm

Lauren, I have no idea — I buy it on the newsstand every month. That would actually work out to be cheaper, since the cover price in the U.S. is $8.99.

I LOVE the orange! I have an orange front door. So beautiful this time of year with the trees changing. Plus – it’s easy when people are coming over. I just tell them it’s the house with the orange door – AND it’s got a curved top. Love your blog and inspirational ideas. KG

Completely unrelated to this post, but….

Do you know of anything (primer, paint, solution) that will remove the damp stored-in-the-basement-forever type smell?

I found an antique dresser in the trash (birdseye maple, dovetail construction, turned knobs, skeleton key locks on every drawer), but it has THAT smell. I’ve been airing it out for a week, but I still smell it, and wouldn’t want my clothes in there yet.

I’m thinking of painting it all, except for the top, b’c of the odor. Any words of wisdom?

  • Reply Down Pillow October 3, 2009 at 11:36 pm

Orange is actually my least favorite color, but I can appreciate good design with just a touch of it. Nice pics 🙂

  • Reply vintage simple October 5, 2009 at 8:47 am

Okay, funny note – totally thought that second shot (of the living room) was your house. 🙂 It’s so you, it’s ridiculous! Anyway, great line-up of orange details in beautiful rooms (except for the polar bear rug – but the room?? OMG, the room is fabulous). Great choices – and orange pops are so much fun… Thanks for sharing these, lady!

lindsay, I’d definitely get rid of the smell before you do any painting. Google gave me this, maybe that’s some help?

  • Reply Ashley October 5, 2009 at 5:58 pm

I love the orange pops! I have been seeing people wear more orange on the street lately, and i love that you brought it into the the home. I wonder if that is missing colour from my black and white room?

  • Reply lindsay October 5, 2009 at 9:01 pm

Thanks for the link Anna. I’m currently trying several of the techniques mentioned. Keeping my fingers crossed…I hate to toss a completely solid antique piece of furniture.

  • Reply Mike October 8, 2009 at 10:12 am

I agree with all of the posters above, these shots and rooms are amazing. However that polar bear rug (I am assuming it is real), made me sick in my stomach. Literally, i almost threw up. And it amazes me that only one person out of 43 comments even loosely mentioned it (unless the other comments got “Rejected”). Sorry for the crush, but I think the days of dead animals in our homes is over.

ps. Love the peace sign as well!

  • Reply Anna at D16 October 8, 2009 at 11:06 am

Um, Mike? Did you actually read my post? Because I straight up mentioned the polar bear rug right under the photos.

Also, WTF is this supposed to mean:
unless the other comments got “Rejected”

Seriously? Who are you to come here and suggest that I’m rejecting comments for ANY reason, much less something like THAT? Way to assume something that’s completely and totally false.

And you do realize that’s not my house, right?

Also, out of curiosity, did the leather furniture shown in three of the other photos also make you almost throw up?

“Sorry for the crush”, Mike, but if you want to have a rational dialogue about animals rights and how personal ethics transfer into the digital representation of style or aesthetics, this is NOT the way to go about it.

Peace is only viral if you don’t act like a ass while you’re pretending to spread it.

Ha! That apartment from the Shoot Factory is my friend Gavin’s place. How lovely is it? It’s as charming in person as it is in the picture. It’s like being in a little boat (maybe it’s the wooden floors, walls and ceiling?). If you’re ever in London I can get you in!
