Yiddish for Babies giveaway!

Filed under books, four legs, friends and family

I never ever do giveaways here, but this is a very special occasion! My friend (and fellow book designer!) Janet Perr has a new book coming out, Yiddish for Babies, and TWO of my adorable nieces are featured in it. (Yiddishe kop and shnozz, if you’re curious.)

The book is SO CUTE and so funny, and I want to do a little giveaway to celebrate its upcoming release on November 10th. To sweeten the grand prize, I’m going to include a copy of one of Janet’s other books, Hip-Hop for Dogs (starring the fabulous BRUNO as the DJ!).

Here’s how it’s going to work:
Leave a comment on this post between now and midnight EST on Sunday, November 1st. On Monday morning, I will use the Random Number Generator to choose three numbers corresponding to the order in which the comments were received.

ETA: COMMENTS ARE NOW CLOSED. I will draw numbers and announce the winners on Monday morning!

Prizes:
1: Yiddish for Babies & Hip-Hop for Dogs
2 & 3: Yiddish for Babies

All books can be autographed and personalized, too!

Evan and I are back from a long weekend spent in Carefree, Arizona for a friend’s wedding. (Click for enlargements!)

A series of errors on the part of the car rental company culminated in us riding around in a red Ford Mustang. If there were ever a car less suited to our personalities, this is probably it.

The upside was the satellite radio. I still can’t believe I actually heard “This Corrosion” on the radio (introduced by Richard Blade, no less) in 2009.

From Evan: “That Mustang made me feel like an underage joyrider. Since I could barely see over the wheel, the entire car was a blind spot. Note to Ford: Please post height requirements on all vehicles.”

The desert gets COLD at night! I was not prepared. We made s’mores.

The best part about leaving New York is coming back (even if you fly into New Jersey).

Get well soon, Morrissey.

Please and thank you.

The world needs you. I need you.

Yay! Black trim!

First of all, thank you so much for all of the birthday wishes yesterday. They are much appreciated. I had a very nice, low-key birthday (just how I like it). Evan gave me the supercute J.A. snail box I’ve had my eye on, and we had mini-red velvet Bundt cakes from Junior’s. Yerrrmy!

I’m on a mini-vacation until Monday, but here are some photos of the exterior of my house, now with black trim (Benjamin Moore Black Beauty)! Keep in mind that the windows still need to be repaired and painted, and the stair treads still need to be stained to match the porch ceiling.

(Sorry for the weird sizes, but I’m not on my own computer right now, and have no access to Photoshop!)

And a before picture, for comparison. It’s hard to tell from the photos, but we’ve also had the bricks cleaned and repointed. Oh! And that ironwork on top of the porch? We had it sandblasted (it was really rusty) and powdercoated (by the same guys that did our bathtub, sink, and radiators!) in black. It looks great.

Bye-bye peeling, discolored, forest green paint! ICK:

I know, I’m so predictable! I’m also super busy this week, but I have a big pile of black-and-white interiors that I’ve been waiting to post, and now’s as good a time as any.

Really, I could just sit here and post B+W interiors all day, every day.

Repost! Vegetarian chili.

It’s been two years since I first posted my recipe for vegetarian chili (that’s it on the right, above), and I think it’s time for a repost now that the weather is getting cooler. THIS IS THE BEST CHILI RECIPE EVER. Trust.

Anna’s Vegetarian Chili
serves 6-8

1 tbsp olive oil
1 medium onion, chopped
3 medium carrots, chopped
4 cloves garlic, diced
1 large yellow bell pepper, chopped
2 jalapeno peppers, seeds removed, diced
2 celery stalks, chopped
2 tbsp chili powder
28 oz can crushed tomatoes with basil*
14 oz can black beans*
14 oz can kidney beans*
1 cup corn kernels
1 tsp ground cumin
1 1/2 tsp dried oregano
1 1/2 tsp dried basil
2 tsp kosher salt
1/2 cup bulgur wheat
1/4 cup balsamic vinegar

Heat oil in a large pot. Add onions, carrots and garlic; sauté until onions are translucent, about 5 minutes. Add yellow pepper, jalapenos, celery and chili powder; cook another 10 minutes. Add tomatoes, beans (with liquid), corn, salt and spices. Bring to a boil. Cover, lower heat, and simmer for 20 minutes. Stir in bulgur wheat. Cover and simmer at least 30 minutes (I usually let everything simmer for a couple of hours to let the flavors really develop, but it’s okay to take it off when the veggies and bulgur are soft), stirring occasionally to prevent sticking. Just as you’re taking the chili off the heat, stir in the balsamic vinegar. I know it might seem weird to put it in, but trust me—it really does make the chili taste extra amazing.

*I take the easy route and use canned beans and tomatoes. You can soak dried beans and use fresh tomatoes if you prefer, of course, but you will want to add water to make up for the liquid in the cans.

QUESTION: Have you tried this recipe already? If so, how do you like it? And have you made any modifications to it? When I made it last week, I was out of corn, so I subbed in a cup of frozen edamame. YUM.

The Psychedelic Furs at Roseland Ballroom, NYC on Friday night. You can see the full set here. (Yes, the Happy Mondays were there too!)

A little Anna-side-project trivia: I’m a big Furs fan. I started Burned Down Days almost 10 years ago, when they reunited after a nearly decade-long break.

New porch ceiling!

Look! We have a new porch ceiling! And a new porch light! Yes, I know the light is very traditional, and it’s really a bit too “faux-old” for my taste—but it does suit the house quite well, and the scale of it is right. Our porch is high off the ground, and small overhead lights look out of place. (By the way, we bought it at Pottery Barn on clearance and then squirreled it away in the basement for a year. They don’t have it anymore, sorry!)

Here’s a gross before shot. As you can see, the current situation is definitely an upgrade from rotted plywood and a bare bulb.

Sorry I don’t have many “during” shots! The demo took forever (not that I had anything to do with it—I left the dirty work for Evan). It was disgusting and marked by the discovery of a wasp infestation.

The new ceiling is tongue-and-groove pine beadboard. We put it up using a nail gun and an air compressor, which was SO FAST AND EASY. I applied two coats of oil-based ZAR Wood Stain in Dark Mahogony, then a coat of ZAR Ultra Max polyurethane in a satin finish.

(And yes, that’s BLACK trim you see! More exterior renovation photos to come…)

Designed by Sven Markelius for Ljungbergs, 1952

Hand printed with a double repeat and requires 18 screens. 15 colors create this dramatic design. The orange colorway hangs in the U.N. (71″x57″)

Buy it here, if you have money to burn. (And if you have enough cash left over, buy one for me, too! I’ll take orange, thx.)

It’s like the secret love child of Alexander Girard’s “Checker Split” fabric and that door in SoHo I’m crazy about:
