Food + Drink + Places + Travels + Vanity + Wearables

Haircut & sunglasses.

My old stylist moved to the other side of the world, so today I got a haircut from Lisa at Fringe on Broome Street for the first time. The salon is super cute, the staff is very sweet, and Lisa did a great job. I’ll be going back to her again for sure.

I’m also modeling my new sunglasses from Anne et Valentin (this is the “Hello” style). I’m really bad about wearing sunglasses even though I know I’m supposed to, but since these are so crazy cool and fancy (check out the detail on the frames—love those ridges), I’m hoping I’ll be more inclined to put them on.

Fringe is conveniently located next door to Babycakes, an all-vegan bakery. Right now there are vegan carrot cake and red velvet cupcakes chilling in my refrigerator, waiting for it to be dessert-time…

Post-haircut, I headed over to Teany, (formerly) Moby’s vegetarian cafe and tea house. Teany had a fire last year and were closed for a long, long time afterward, and this was my first visit post-renovation. It’s not quite as cute is it used to be (I guess because there are a lot of new materials in there and it’s not as charmingly ramshackle as it once was), but the food is still REALLY, REALLY GOOD. Between 2002 and 2006, I ate so many of their vegan “turkey” club sandwiches that it’s kind of absurd. I actually don’t think I’ve ever ordered anything else (though I’ve eaten plenty of nibbles off of other people’s plates!), and today was no different.

A couple of months ago, a D16 reader asked if I was in the Teany book. I’d never seen it before, so I actually had NO idea that I am indeed in there! I saw a copy on a shelf at Teany today, so I took a picture of the page with my photo so you can see how goofy I look when someone else takes my picture. I guess I was having a bad bangs day, too!! I vaguely remember a Teany employee taking my picture years ago and asking me to fill out a little survey, but I never questioned what it was for. Hah!

On my way out, I stopped to take a photo of the floor in Teany’s bathroom. Look familiar??!! So funny.

You look absolutely divine! I love your haircut and your sunglasses! I also love the vegan “turkey” club, and I hope I get to eat one there with you this summer!

I was recently coveting Anne et Valentine frames and sunglasses. In fact, this exact pair. The only problem? In Australia they are ex ex exxy – beyond the current budget but just OH SO LOVELY.

    And you’re rockin’ the do.

  • Reply Siobhan June 11, 2010 at 6:19 pm

*sigh* if only my skin looked as porcelain as yours. love the do.

  • Reply Carrie June 11, 2010 at 6:23 pm

Toe. Nail. Polish. from whereee? Perfect color, indeed.

  • Reply Anna at D16 June 11, 2010 at 6:25 pm

@Adam: Awww! I remember talking & eating with you at Teany. 🙂 I’ll bet we had the peanut butter bomb for dessert, too, right?

@Siobhan: You don’t want my skin, trust me. It’s all fake.

    @Carrie: Essie Chinchilly!

Very cute cut! And love that lip colour on you. Can I ask what you are wearing?

  • Reply Amanda Kay June 11, 2010 at 6:53 pm

That D16 reader was me! I actually felt silly asking if it was your picture, but glad I did since you had no idea it was in such a charming little book. LOVE the haircut, as a stylist I always enjoy your posts about your hair! And those sunglasses are just awesome. In every way.

  • Reply Anna at D16 June 11, 2010 at 6:54 pm

@Deb: No lip color here, just clear balm!

  • Reply Siobhan June 11, 2010 at 6:58 pm

Shouldn’t you be in bed or something?

So fitting that you go to a salon called Fringe! (that’s what we call bangs in Australia)

  • Reply jessica June 11, 2010 at 9:31 pm

i love your haircut; it looks great on you! also, that nail polish color on your toes is cute.

    Great haircut! Nice glasses.

  • Reply Lori June 11, 2010 at 10:58 pm

Love, love, LOVE the bangs. And the sunglasses. And the sandwich. And the toes. And I have recently read gray is the “it” color for this season. Which begs the question… Why did i pick the sparkly red?

  • Reply chrispito June 11, 2010 at 11:10 pm

    Cute!!!
Anna I hate sunglasses as well (anything on my head makes me feel as decorated as a Christmas tree) but having had two eye diseases, and being threatened by blindness–dude, your eyes will thank you.

I’m sorry:( Off my soapbox and back to lurking.

  • Reply chrispito June 11, 2010 at 11:12 pm

I’m sorry that sounded so alarmist. I obviously feel very strongly about sunglasses, ha ha

  • Reply Jules June 11, 2010 at 11:39 pm

I’ve sat here for five minutes trying to think of a tasteful and nonfetish-y way to say you have beautiful feet, but I’m at a loss. Anyway, they are beautiful. Hmm. I still feel oddly uncomfortable and slightly pervy for saying that. I promise my intent is only to compliment you. 🙂

It goes without saying that your hair is great, too.

  • Reply juliet June 11, 2010 at 11:44 pm

oh my gosh, so many things… first, love the hair. second, the yellow shirt looks great too. next, did you photoshop your skin? if not, i’m jealous! also, i wanted to go to babycakes last year in nyc, but didn’t have time. is it good? finally, those tiles!!! still on my list for when i have my own place!

  • Reply kelly w June 11, 2010 at 11:46 pm

Yellow top! Love! I think that was an excellent solution to your recent ‘what do I wear, now that it’s summer?’ post.

(PS, love your beauteous, supposedly fake [<- not buying that] skin, the color of your lips [which I wish was a lipstick so I could copy], and grey nail varnish, also.)

Hey, I like your new hair cut. Love it.

  • Reply Sue June 12, 2010 at 7:30 am

love the hair, love the glasses, love the alexander girard print (I have that one too)…you look great in yellow……and that sandwich looks soo good…and did I mention the flooring…yummy!

  • Reply Adele @modernemotive June 12, 2010 at 9:07 am

Love the haircut. I want bangs so bad but I’m afraid to take the leap. The last time I got them (maybe 2 years ago) the girl did a total hack job.

  • Reply Meg June 12, 2010 at 9:30 am

The cut looks fantastic! So glad you liked Fringe…also, it’s being next to Babycakes is pretty freaking awesome, right? Personally, I’m partial to their donuts and the agave brownie bites. Yum.

  • Reply rebecca June 12, 2010 at 9:33 am

Cute cut! (Were you able to skip the scalp massage?)

  • Reply Anna at D16 June 12, 2010 at 10:37 am

@unha: Yes, she was great!! Thank you SO much for the recommendation. 🙂

@chrispito: I know, I know! I’ve had eye problems, too, and I know I really need to take care of them.

@Jules: BANNED! j/k. 😀 I know what you meant, and thank you.

@juliet & @kelly w: No Photoshop here (though I’m not above it!), but I’m wearing plennnnnty of makeup. My skin is not great. I swear. I don’t have sun damage or much in the way of wrinkles, but I still break out like a teenager and my fair/delicate skin scars really easily. It’s very frustrating, and I’m incredibly self-conscious about it. You just can’t tell in photos…and really, I am good with the makeup.

(And yes, the cupcakes were really good!!)

Your hair looks awesome anna. And a very nice afternoon too.

  • Reply Flora June 12, 2010 at 12:41 pm

    Hello 🙂
I wish being vegan was more popular in France, right now when you say you are, people stare at you and say “no animal product, but what do you eat then??” and it’s so difficult to find a place where you can get something vegan when going out!
You look fresh and clear, love the clear balm effect. Have a lovely week-end!

  • Reply Leah June 12, 2010 at 3:31 pm

I already said it on facebook, but I’ll say it again! Great cut. Great spex too. And jealous of your proximity to amazing vegetarian/vegan fare!!! I have the Babycakes cookbook, but unfortunately I’m not much of a baker (much better on top of the stove than I am underneath it), and I kind of butchered their gingerbread cake recipe.

  • Reply Frank June 12, 2010 at 7:49 pm

    That sandwich!

  • Reply Maeghan June 12, 2010 at 10:10 pm

I love your toe polish! Chinchilly?

babycakes AND teany in the same day? sounds like heaven to me.

  • Reply Fiona June 13, 2010 at 7:23 am

I know you’re denying it, but I always think vegans have a clean-from-the-inside complexion that isn’t fakeable with make-up or photoshop.

  • Reply Siobhan June 13, 2010 at 8:20 am

Hi, Anna: Just a note to say that you have more than one Siobhan following you. I am the Siobhan who asked about the camera the other week — thanks for that info, btw. I am not the Siobhan who said you should be in bed! From now on, perhaps I will distinguish myself with some modifier like…Bleached Blonde Siobhan. (I would say Brooklyn Siobhan, but I suspect there are a few of those out there.) P.S. Love the black-on-black sandals, too — they don’t look too stereotypically gladiator. Info? Need to get a pair before another summer passes…

  • Reply Anna at D16 June 13, 2010 at 9:58 am

@Fiona: Well, unfortunately, that is not true for this vegan. I’m not about to post of photo of my self bare-faced, so you’re just going to have to accept the fact that I’m not lying. This is something I’ve been dealing with for many years now, and it’s embarrassing for me to have to insist like this. Believe me, I would love to not have to spend an hour applying makeup every morning or to no feel like I live my life around avoiding been seeing without anything on my face. It sucks.

@Bleached Blonde Siobhan: The sandals are from H&M, and they also come in grey-on-grey!

  • Reply heather June 13, 2010 at 11:29 am

Your hair looks great and cute sunglasses and sandals! I have to wear sunglasses all the time or I have to squint and end up looking really angry. My eyes hate the sun.

  • Reply fiona June 13, 2010 at 1:30 pm

    sorry

  • Reply Fiona June 13, 2010 at 5:07 pm

Anna I skimmed over the earlier comments before posting mine, and read your first answer about your skin but missed the second. All my bad. Sorry again for causing you embarrassment, I’m knuckle-bitingly embarrassed myself.

  • Reply Leslie June 13, 2010 at 6:48 pm

  • Reply jenny M June 13, 2010 at 8:26 pm

Lovely haircut and cool new sunglasses. 🙂

  • Reply Anna at D16 June 13, 2010 at 9:16 pm

@Fiona: Don’t worry about it, I’m not angry or anything! It’s just a sensitive subject for me. I would never post a “bad” photo of myself (I actually don’t post pictures of myself all that often…), but I always feel like a huge liar when people comment positively on my skin. It’s not that I’m trying to mislead or misrepresent, but if I wouldn’t take the trash out without makeup on, I certainly wouldn’t take a photo of myself in that state, either. 😉

    @Leslie: H&M!

oooo! I LOOOVE Teany. I’m so glad they’ve reopened! I’ve only been there once, but I just adored it. I’m curious as to what the new space looks like. What they had before was pretty much a dream – I wanted to move in and stay forever. I’m sure the new place is cute too. Wish I had an NYC trip planned so I could check it out!

Funny coincidence, I go to Fringe too. I can never take my eyes off the fabulous patched Victorian encaustic tile floors. Also like the plain white painted embossed (Lincrusta?) wallpaper in the bathroom.
