APT: Washington Heights + Four Legs

The blanket.

A couple of people asked about the blanket in my last post, so I thought I’d show a little more of the bed. This is the same blanket, only flipped over. It’s the VILMIE throw from IKEA, and it’s reversible! The material is a soft, wool blend, and for 20 clams, tough to beat in the value department.

The coffee sack cross pillow comes from Brin & Nohl, and the vase was a Goodwill find.

Now, you may be wondering what happened to the tassels on the blanket. In a word: Fritz. Though fully-reformed in the sofa-chewing department, Fritz seems to have developed an obsession with tassels. I took this photo the morning after a particularly industrious night’s work on his part—nine tassels, all neatly nibbled off and tossed on the floor. He’s on a mission. There are only three tassels left on the blanket at this point, and frankly, I wish him the best of luck in fulfilling his goals.

Looks like Fritz didn’t just toss the tassels, he downright lined them up!! Quite the savvy canine you have… 🙂

Nothing beats a great blanket and one of a kind thrift. Nothing.
    Thanks for the post!

OH my, it’s REVERSIBLE, too?! This might have just gone from a want to a need. New bed necessitates new blanket.

The studio is looking so, so cool. Did you guys paint the radiator?

  • Reply Ana Herda July 23, 2010 at 2:11 am

I saw that blanket but passed it up now I’m having regrets.

Did you see the matching curtains that go with it?

  • Reply izzy July 23, 2010 at 3:24 am

I was just wondering if you have the bed in front of the radiator in the winter too? I always like the idea of putting my bed under the window, but it never works because the radiator is there…

My first reaction seeing the 3 shots (and before coffee) was oh my, Anna’s gone and done something incredibly clever with tie-dying.

  • Reply Anna at D16 July 23, 2010 at 7:15 am

@Dan: No, the radiator was already painted. It’s not exactly the same white as the walls, but it’s close enough — as long as you don’t look at it sideways, because it’s pink inside.

@Ana: No! I didn’t see the curtains! I’ll have to check them out next time.

@izzy: We moved in during the winter, and that’s where we put the bed. The radiator pipes that run through the kitchen and bathroom give off such an enormous amount of heat that we never actually open the vent on the radiator (yes, this is a rental!) — so it’s really never even hot.

I think Fritz knows what we all know…..tassels on a blanket are seriously annoying. He’s just trying to protect you from getting whipped in the face when you pull up the covers. He is a good, good boy.

The space looks great, and I particularly love the pillow!

  • Reply Lori July 23, 2010 at 10:09 am

That is so funny he chewed them off. It is impressive to see such perseverance. I too wish him well!! 🙂

I am new to comment with you so, Hellooooo.

My dog Stella is also a fringe artist. My dog Henry’s medium of choice is rawhide. Oh, those little rascals. I love the style in your home. So clean. Thank you!

i applaud fritz’s design sense. i think the blanket actually looks better without the tassels.

  • Reply Avant-Gardenist July 23, 2010 at 12:22 pm

Maybe he’s part raccoon. When one found the tassels on my hammock it was all over. Literally.

  • Reply jennifer in sf July 23, 2010 at 12:40 pm

Ha! At least he’s committed to his goals.

This is good timing for me, I need some new blankets pronto. It’s freaking cold here at night right now. (I know. I know.)

  • Reply Fiona July 23, 2010 at 1:05 pm

Go, Fritz, go! It’s good to have goals.

    that space looks so comfortable!

Last photo: such a good composition. The ordinary out of context can be so arresting.

    glad you have a/c!
does your house have central, window or none?!
    did Fritz have help? (Bruno?!)

This reminds me of my Lab! He has only one weakness – chewing the corners of pillows. Pillowcase and all. So, every pillow and pillowcase we own is sans corner. I guess it’s his fetish! Hey, it’s cheaper than replacing shoes and furniture! 🙂

I adore your acceptance of your dogs’ personalities. Thank you for making me feel justified with my own dogs (and sane).

I LOVE Brin and Nohl! I just bought a custom-made storage basket from her with that same cross on it. It’s absolutely beautiful, and Jody was so lovely to interact with.

Oh awesome! I know people tend to knock on Ikea a lot, but man, it is The Place To Go for cheap, pretty things. I love Ikeas blankets and textiles!

Also, good luck Fritz. I know you’ll get the rest of those tassels off. 🙂

  • Reply Avant-Gardenist July 24, 2010 at 2:16 pm

    eez theece the blanket?

  • Reply Modernism2010 July 24, 2010 at 6:27 pm

That is such a cute dog

  • Reply Stacey July 24, 2010 at 9:52 pm

A blanket sans fringes feels better on the face and doesn’t tickle the nose. Fritz just figured it all out and actually did something about it!:-).

  • Reply Holyoke Home July 24, 2010 at 10:13 pm

Maybe he was attacked by a giant tassel in a previous life?

  • Reply Suzen July 26, 2010 at 8:22 am

I just love that you aren’t “bad dogging” Fritz, but rather enjoying his ah, obsession. Too funny!

  • Reply Lisa-Marie July 26, 2010 at 4:45 pm

How cute, love the radiator as well!

  • Reply Unplanned Cooking July 26, 2010 at 7:23 pm

Fritz sounds like he does to your home what our children do to ours 🙂

do we get more of an apartment tour soon?

and what’s the print you have up on the side wall there?

  • Reply Anna at D16 July 26, 2010 at 9:16 pm

@annette: If we didn’t have air conditioning in the apartment, we’d probably be dead by now. This summer has been brutal in NYC, and we’re on the 6th floor! We have a couple of portable window units in the house, too. I grew up without A/C, but I can’t imagine living without it now.

    @Avant-Gardenist: Yep, that’s it!

@ryan: That’s a gigantic Morrissey poster. 🙂 And yes, I really should take more apartment photos soon. I can’t believe it’s been almost 8 months already! (!!!)

just wondering what size bed that is because the blanket fits nicely and I’m thinking about getting one. Is it a full size?
    the bed looks uber cool!
