Nice stuff in rooms with white floors.

Yes, that’s really the best title I could come up with. Considering this is, what, the 37th time I’ve posted about white floors, it’s getting hard to keep the language fresh!

This photo is giving me allllllll kind of ideas. Like…isn’t that exactly what I should do with my fruit crates? And don’t I have an antique mirror sitting around that I can paint white? And why doesn’t my sofa have ticking-stripe cushions on it?

I know it’s hard to look past the fact that the Eames LCW is assembled incorrectly (argh!), but goodness, this room is pretty. It’s also making me miss having something to play music on that isn’t an iPod dock. I still have all of my records and CDs (okay, and my cassettes…shut up), but they’re all stored out of sight and converted to MP3. Sad.

Fantasy time, I know. Who designed that lamp, by the way? It’s like David Weeks meets Serge Mouille meets Gino Sarfatti by way of Gio Ponti.

ETA: The lamp is by Gunther Lambert, and is available in the US through the Conran Shop. (Thanks, JF!)

I can’t even. I mean…shamone. Is this not the most amazingly perfect kitchen you’ve ever seen in your entire life? I love the diagonal floorboards (which are probably an exposed subfloor), and that poured-concrete countertop/cabinet base/backsplash. Poured concrete anything is so deceptively simple looking. Oh, and that island!

Geez. If our kitchen looked this nice, I’d let Evan keep an amp in there, just to add ambiance.

I want that bust in the “lamp” photo!

  • Reply Kate October 27, 2010 at 7:45 pm

Looks similar to the Praying Mantis Floor lamp from white on white

have you ever been there when you’re in the city? great spot. I’m completely fine with some of the knock-offs they carry.

Especially the new Arne Jacobsen knock offs!

    • Anna @ D16 October 27, 2010 at 7:48 pm

The “Praying Mantis” lamp is a direct knockoff of this Serge Mouille lamp.

White on White does make very convincing copies, but I am not a fan of knockoffs for ethical reasons. I realize that buying the real thing for $60-80,000 carries its own set of ethical concerns (not that I will ever be able to afford it), but if I would prefer to give my money to someone creating new designs that I can afford.

Anthropologie also has a lamp with similar styling though not as industrial in its detailing (apologies for the terribly long link):

      I fixed the link. 😉 (& thanks!!)

    • Dan October 27, 2010 at 10:48 pm

Or vintage! Knock-offs… don’t get me started.

    • Anna @ D16 October 28, 2010 at 2:17 pm

Dan, if you find a vintage Serge Mouille lamp for $30 (or for free, on the curb), I am never speaking to you again. And then I am breaking into your apartment and stealing it.

      Just FYI.

    • Kate October 28, 2010 at 8:01 am

Yeah everyone has a own line drawn on knockoffs wherever it may be – I’m completely against chairs and sofas and larger items but smaller pieces ($50-200) I think it’s a nice taste of a range of products I’m never going to afford *tear*

    • Anne October 30, 2010 at 12:54 pm

The Anthropologie lamp looks uber-cheesy in person. I considered buying it and then saw it in the store. It’s awkward in a bad way, IMO. Nothing’s scaled right. It does photograph well, though.

    • Anna @ D16 October 30, 2010 at 1:06 pm

That’s my reaction to most stuff from Anthropologie, sadly.

LCW is having an identity crisis.. LOL
I’m in floorboard nightmare at the moment. Dark, white or limed.. I go over it daily with a different outcome each day. The Kitchen is good enough to sleep in.. swoon. I love the concrete slap etc. As for “that” light. God only knows. It’s got me stumped! It’s a mixture of about 3 designers. I’m guessing it’s straight from the 50’s 60’s Italian. I’m going to have to hunt down that light.. it’s bothering me know!! sal

I was wondering what was wrong with that Eames chair, I was looking at it, thinking it must have been photographed at at weird angle then I read you comment!

    fabulous post!!

Some very inspiring ideas in these photos! I can’t tell you how much I love poured concrete countertops! I really am hoping to do them in my kitchen, whenever it is I’m finally able to remodel it!

love them crates. and the gleaming copper pots in the kitchen.

  • Reply madie October 27, 2010 at 10:40 pm

    Anna,
The floor lamp looks a lot like the Flex Floor Lamp from Bo Concept. I saw it at the store and while it does look fabulous (I love the arms) it was not very sturdy and in my opinion doesn’t justify the price tag.

I just bought a mirror almost EXACTLY like the one in the first pic. It’s the color of a bandaid.
    1. Attempt to strip the paint and see what’s under there?
    2. Paint it white?
    3. Paint it black?

Knowing me, probably all three of those things will happen. Then something I haven’t thought of yet.

  • Reply kay* October 27, 2010 at 11:11 pm

omg that first pic – with the fruit crates shelf thingy?!?! i’m SOOO doing that in my place in India! i think this is the second fruit crate idea i’ve gotten from you! i’m sure i’ll be able to find fruit crates all over the place…hopefully.

    so awesome.

Do you know where to find fruit crates in Toronto?? I have an old Pepsi crate that I use as a wine rack/shelf that I bought years ago from the Queen West Antique shop when Parkdale was considered ketchy part of town, and thier prices were affordable. But now that Parkdale is becoming hipster central, thier prices have skyrocketed, and I refuse to spend $90 for a crate – even if it says Canada Dry on it.

    • Anna @ D16 October 28, 2010 at 12:35 am

I’m not in Toronto, but I just picked my up from the trash outside a closed grocery store.

I loooove the white floors in my studio (http://studioatlillehus.blogspot.com/2010/05/1-new-decade-deserves-new-look.html) – After I painted the entire room with Ultra White it was hard for me to put anything in the room – I’d just sit on the floor and savor the perfection of White…Alas, it is a studio, so things had to go back in…

  • Reply Minnie October 28, 2010 at 12:53 pm

Oh man, this is all making me want to go thrifting. I am one crate away from creating a bookcase! Great pics with so many ideas. I am usually all about color but this color palette is quite soothing.

Your kitchen IS really nice. And that Eames chair is bothering me.

    • heather October 28, 2010 at 4:26 pm

Ha! You’re welcome to come over and help me paint! ;p
Or at least help me decide on a color.

Floor lamp is made by Gunther Lambert (www.lambert-home.de), available at The Conran Shop… http://www.conranusa.com/ProductDetails.aspx?pid=8587&cid=Floor&language=en-US

  • Reply JF October 28, 2010 at 4:37 pm

A little obsessed by the Arredoluce Triennale lamp and did a lot of research to find a similar lamp in production for our place… the Gunther Lambert was on our list.

That is so what I am wanting to do with fruit crates and I am so glad to see a picture. LOVE IT!!! My next thought is, and I am sure it is because I have 2 rowdy boys, another boy on the way and a 65 lb dog, how do they keep the mugs from tumbling out?? It looks so good though!! 🙂 I may have to store something less breakable in mine… Books, NERF guns or some such thing… 😉 Now to find the dang fruit crates. All the ones I have seen are around 7 bucks a pop and I am too cheap to pay that kind of moolah. And if only my husband shared my desire to paint the ugly wood floors in our “master suite”. That makes me laugh because it is anything but…

    • Anna @ D16 October 28, 2010 at 9:22 pm

The term “master bedroom” always makes me giggle. Also…NERF guns! Yes! That will look great!! 😉

I found my crates in the trash. Have you tried asking at a veggie/fruit stand near you?

  • Reply Callista October 28, 2010 at 9:55 pm

I don’t suppose you’d have any interest in about your music storage would you? I still ALWAYS buy my music on physical cds, and I’m going slightly mad from the clutter. I usually seem to find short-term storage solutions, but as my collection grows, so does my need for a more permanent solution.

    • Anna @ D16 October 28, 2010 at 10:01 pm

All of my CDs are in the white dresser (IKEA MALM) in my dining room:

    • Callista October 28, 2010 at 11:20 pm

Oh that’s a great idea! It’s definitely not something I had ever considered before, and it seems so much more practical than anything I’ve ever used. Thank you for taking the time and energy to get back to me. 🙂

Crate shelving on wheels, love all the things that can be made
    with old boxes and crates.

The mirror would be easy to make too with […] Spray Paint.

A good friend of mine just moved into an awesome apt with white hardwood floors, but decided to paint them because she didn’t want to deal with them looking dirty – I was so upset! White floors are brilliant. I will be showing her this link to make her sad, haha!!

crates on casters (pic 1)~ love to see items recycled and at their raw natural state. like the antlers overhead! restoration hardware has a great selection of resincast antlers. and the white floors and walls~ a blank canvas!

Have you ever tried to ask Anna (the Ikea Anna) a question? She/ it is so completely idiotic it would be funny if you were not actually trying to find out some pretty basic info with no other means

    • Anna @ D16 February 21, 2011 at 12:04 am

Yes, I have! It’s totally pointless. Sometimes my friends just email me to “Ask Anna” instead. 😉
