Mamma Biscuit as Anna Wintour.

I asked my friend and fellow book cover designer, John, to write up a little press release about his rescue pug’s big win this past weekend at costume contest in Fort Tryon Park. From John:

“Tommy and I are the proud dads of this year’s winner of the Best Homemade Costume and Best in Show awards at the Fort Tryon Park Howl-O-Ween Dog Parade and Costume Contest! Mamma Biscuit brought down the dog house with her take on Anna Wintour.

“A tough old bitch, Mamma has seen it all: she is a puppy mill rescue who spent seven years of her life caged indoors and was forced to produce over 100 puppies against her will. Curly Tail Pug Rescue came to her aid, rehabilitated her through foster care and found her a forever home with us.

“As Anna Wintour, Mamma has seen every hemline, knit and dress from Paris to Milan and beyond, and has her paw in every working designer’s studio, from Westwood and McQueen to Chanel and Galliano. She knows exactly what her canine followers are looking for and delivers it up in the most influential canine fashion magazine to ever grace a newsstand: Dogue!

“Despite having a terrible hair day (note to Betsey Johnson), Mamma was decked out in Chanel with a Louis Vuitton handbag and carried the “Black and White” September issue of Dogue. An amused crowd quickly fell silent with Mamma’s critical yet high fashion stare, and were all left compelled to vote her the winner of the contest! As I carried Mamma up to receive her CFDA award…errr I mean, Best in Show award…I informed the crowd that like Anna Wintour, she too needs to be carried (note to Tim Gunn), although Mamma could work two pairs of Monolos better than Anna could ever work a simple sneaker!”

I love this, even more so now that Mamma Biscuit is getting the life she has always deserved. From Puppy Mill to Dogue, that’s quite a journey and will make a fabulous autobiography.

    Hysterical!
my 13 year old daughter went as Anna Wintour this year- one person knew who she was,
oh well, last year the 8 year old went as Groucho and hardly anyone knew who she was- what is wrong with the world??

  • Reply Jo November 11, 2010 at 9:00 pm

Does Mamma Biscuit also have a slightly Americanised cut glass English accent ??
and if you had The September Issue on the TV I wonder if Mamma Biscuit would bark angrily when Grace Coddington was on screen ?? what do you think ?
    Jo xx

Thank you to Momma Biscuits daddy’s for publishing this! I am a volunteer for curly tail pug rescue, and Momma B was one of four that we rescued during that time. From Drama Queen to Diva!! Thank you soo much for providing her with SUCH a wonderful new life!!! WE are all thrilled to see how she has blossomed from the frail little girl who arrived into a Diva, now, enjoying the high life!!

  • Reply Kate Corwyn February 6, 2011 at 7:04 am

Why? And do you think of your dog as a pet or as a fashion accessory?

    • Anna @ D16 February 6, 2011 at 8:57 am

Kate, my friends rescued Mamma Biscuit from a life lived in truly deplorable conditions for many years. They love her unconditionally, and she is the center of their lives—they are committed to making sure that her senior years are spent feeling comfortable, safe, and loved. If you read the post rather than just looking at the pictures, you’ll understand her history a little better.

“Pet” isn’t a strong enough word to express how my friends feel about Mamma Biscuit. They know she doesn’t care whether her jacket is polar fleece or tweed, just that she’s warm. Obviously these photos are just for human fun—they are under no illusion that pugs care about fashion. This was for a FUN event and to raise awareness about the joy that rescue animals can bring into our lives. (Would you have asked the same question if she’d been wearing a spider costume or a t-shirt with a funny phrase on it? Because I assure you, Mamma Biscuit doesn’t care who Anna Wintour is!)

As far as Mamma Biscuit was concerned, this was just a regular day at the dog park.

  • Reply Sailor the Wonder Dog February 8, 2011 at 6:18 am

From one pug to another, I just love you Mamma Biscuit. You are my inspiration and role model. You are so beautiful, you have come through so much adversity, I can’t tell you how I admire you.
