Weekend to-do.

evanbass.jpg

This is an overly-ambitious list of things I’d like to accomplish this weekend. I realize the wallpapering is probably not going to happen, but hey, I can hope.

SATURDAY:
• Stain the crates black. I had planned to leave the wood bare as in this photo, but upon closer (indoor) inspection, the wood is not that cute.
• Buy bolts, washers, and nuts to attach the crates to each other, and casters to screw to the bottom.
• Bring the air conditioners upstairs for winter storage. Seriously. Do not leave them sitting in the hallway for another week. Enough already.
• Watch Grizzly Man.
• Clip Fritz’s nails. Or at least one or two of them.

SUNDAY:
• RAKE LEAVES.
• Figure out some things to make for lunches that are not chili or lentil soup.
• Wallpaper the upstairs hallway. I’ve had two rolls of Julia Rothman’s incredible “Pieces” wallpaper in matte silver set aside for well over a year now. Time to get crackin’.

p.s. Doesn’t Evan look nice? I love watching him play music. I like the beard-ish thing he has going on, too. I’m not usually a fan of facial hair on men (or on women, I guess), but I’m definitely warming up to this late-fall scruff.

I love reading your to do lists because it reminds me that we are all more alike than not. We leave stuff sitting in the hallway for way too long, if I still had a yard, I would have to type rake leaves in caps because it’s that urgent, and will also most likely be ignored when it comes down to it, and dang it, thinking up lunches is the worst!

Also, I could totally go for another viewing of Grizzly Man. It’s a good one!

    • Anna @ D16 November 12, 2010 at 8:44 pm

I’ve never seen Grizzly Man!! We finally got it from Netflix last week, but when we opened it, the disc was cracked and we had to request a new copy. I’ve wanted to see it forever! I love Werner Herzog.

  • Reply Meg November 12, 2010 at 8:48 pm

For lunch, maybe a vegan version of this?

    http://www.food52.com/recipes/7329_butternut_squash_and_roasted_garlic_galette

Also, Grizzly Man is…upsetting. Which you probably know. Just be ready. Amazing, but upsetting.

    • Anna @ D16 November 12, 2010 at 8:52 pm

Oh yeah, I know…I mean…I know how it ends. :

That galette looks delicious, but I don’t think I have the wherewithal to figure out how to successfully covert a dish so dependent on the flavors of different cheeses to something vegan. I’m not that skilled! (Also, I need to make things that can be frozen, stored, and then microwaved at the office…)

Grizzly Man is awesome. I love Werner Herzog. I actually saw him speak and do a q&a when The Wild Blue Yonder came out, and it’s really one of my favorite things I’ve ever done. If you get the chance go see him.

I’ve been making little burritos out of quinoa and black beans, with roasted sweet potato and feta for lunch. You could easily leave out the feta and they’d still be tasty. I make like 12 at a time and freeze them.

  • Reply Shannon November 12, 2010 at 9:22 pm

On a whim this week, I threw a can of chickpeas, some taco seasoning, diced red peppers, canned black beans, and frozen corn into a frying pan and cooked it all up. Put it in some Ezekiel tortillas with some salsa and rolled up (I also added a sprinkle of cheese and dollop of sour cream, but that’s easily omitted). It was freaking delicious.

    • Anna @ D16 November 12, 2010 at 10:53 pm

I am loving this burrito-ish thing that you and Jennifer in SF have been doing. I never thought about freezing stuff like that, but why not?

Plus, there are really good options for vegan cheese and sour cream!

    • whitney November 14, 2010 at 11:18 am

I do the same things with beans/corn/veggies, and then make a giant pot of brown rice. I’ll bring a container of the beans and rice to work with me, and it’s a great lunch.

you do have yourself quite the hottie there, with or without guitar. together, you two make a gorgeous couple 🙂

I am not sure if this is something you’ve answered before, or talk openly about on your blog – but what’s the story of your love? how did you two meet? and how long have you been married? if it’s too personal a question, you can tell me to mind my own business, i’d totally understand.

    • Anna @ D16 November 12, 2010 at 10:09 pm

It’s okay! We met online (of course!) about 8 1/2 years ago, and we’ve been married for 6 1/2 years. 🙂 We got married at City Hall in NYC.

I posted this on our 5-year anniversary.

    • kelly w November 13, 2010 at 2:57 pm

online randomly, or online via a site designed for that? I’ve been trying to motivate myself to post a profile at OK Cupid for several months, now, but everything I write feels like an advert selling ‘Kelly’ product, which creeps me out. 🙁 Any advice? (PS, totally okay if you’d rather not answer. I’m just really envious of what you and Evan have. 🙂 )

    • Anna @ D16 November 13, 2010 at 4:06 pm

I think it depends more on the combination of people than it does the place where you meet!

    • me @{life or something...} November 14, 2010 at 10:50 am

just when i thought you guys couldn’t get any more awesome, what a perfect 5 year anniversary love letter!

  • Reply Sashira November 12, 2010 at 10:22 pm

Maybe I should start blogging my to-do lists. Then they might actually get done.

    • Anna @ D16 November 12, 2010 at 10:51 pm

It totally helps. I actually get embarrassed if things aren’t publicly crossed out, so I try extra hard to get it all done!

  • Reply hannah November 12, 2010 at 11:03 pm

I love the fall scruff, It makes me think cozy and warm.

  • Reply Catherine November 13, 2010 at 8:05 am

I’ve been batch-cooking chana masala for work lunches lately – it’s a great winter warmer! I’ve tried a couple of recipes but, as ever, Smitten Kitchen comes up trumps. (A handful or two of spinach makes a great addition, too.)

It freezes well and is good with or without rice/naan/chapati.

I posted pictures of my basement just to shame my way to getting it cleaned up. Hope that it works.

Have fun crossing things off your list!

Hi Anna, I was thinking if Evan ever comments on your blog at all? And if not, why not. Thanks.

    • Anna @ D16 November 13, 2010 at 4:08 pm

He has a few times, but he’s not really the blog-commenting type. He did write a great guest post once though!

soup we had last week for lunch:
    4 cups butternut squash (cubed)
    4 cups potatoes (cubed)
1-2 leeks chopped, size doesn’t really matter
a few glugs of olive oil
    a few cloves of garlic
4 cups veggie broth (er, might need more… I can’t remember if it was 4 or 5 but it should be obvious if it looks too thick)
After sauteeing the leeks and garlic in olive oil for a bit, add everything else, simmer for about 20 minutes, let it cool and puree. I purree’d about half, mashed up the bits in the other half (I like my soups a bit chunky) and randomly added some already cooked quinoa and chickpeas I had in the fridge for some protein. It was delicious! This does make an obscene amount though (I think I got 8 servings) so feel free to half it.

    • Anna @ D16 November 14, 2010 at 8:46 am

Yum! I think I already have everything I need to make this, actually…

Anna I l Love quick easy lunches cos I work a lot of afternoons at my hospital, I want a yummy lunch that feels like a main meal but only takes a few
1- Instant cous cous and almost any thing. I make a batch of cous cous and a nice home made dressing with oil lemon juice and dijon mustard add chopped tomatoes, red onion, then add other vegies, grilled, or steamed, just make sure your dressing is tasy and you can vary the ingredients.
2- jamie olivers kedgeree (without the fish for the vegans) just swap in veg for the fish, I make the rice in a rice cooker, (best thing I ever bought, so many quick rice meals)
    happy weekend list doing

anna I really like making a big bunch of falafel balls–you can freeze them, take a handful for lunch. In a separate container, grate carrot, dice red pepper, some green onion, spinach or whatever. Heat the falafel balls, toss into salad-y container, cover with yogurt or some non-dairy (soy yogurt? sorry–I’m not up to snuff with this). Swirl together, stick in a pita, and enjoy.

making falafel balls is sort of annoying, but no more annoying than–what>?

    • Anna @ D16 November 13, 2010 at 11:03 pm

That does sound good…and I could cheat by buying pre-made, frozen falafel. 😉 (And you’d usually use tahini and/or hummus on on falafel, which is vegan!)

    • chrispito November 15, 2010 at 11:31 am

      frozen falafel balls? ::faints::
      i need some!

  • Reply Sue November 14, 2010 at 1:24 pm

I have some frozen falafel in my freezer right now, just have to get some hummus and pita bread…..

depending on how you feel about parsnips, this soup is really heavenly, rich but not heavy. i bet it would be delish with miso broth.

April 30 is a holiday in Holland we call it Queens-day (as in royalty) everyone has a day off.
Have you tried sandwiches (grilled sourdough?) with grilled vegetables in slices, with pesto or hummus (or olive-paste)? Also very delicious.
One of my favoriet vegan sandwiches is a thin layer of miso-soup paste with mayo (vegan) and slices of avocado on top with a little salt and pepper.

My friend has issues cutting his dog’s nails too. He covers his hand in the dog’s favourite food ever, and as the dog licks it off and is busy cuts his nails. The dog doesn’t mind at all now! Total transformation.

I was meant to paint to do a feature wall in our bedroom with Gray Pavilion from Farrow and Ball but instead I went to walk the dog and made these cards with my kid…a lot more relaxing than DIY

    Next weekend! I’ll do DIY

So, two good soup recipes from the Moosewook Cookbook that are always good: carrot and split pea. Some folks are not a fan of split pea, however, I really LOVE it. V. rich and hearty. Recommend that you make a big pan of brocoli rabe and make a sandwich with it to go with the soup. The orange and the green go together so well. Also, recommend for lunch lentils with rice and carrots……can cheat with the lentils and buy the precooked version at Trader Joe’s, which I love, or make it yourself buy boiling them until tender. Top with steamed carrots. While these are not items you necessarily freeze, you can make them on sunday and then eat them during the week. Have a v. easy and hearty vegetable soup recipe that carries well for lunch (or for dinner) that I make with Savoy cabbage, one of my favorites. Plan on making it for dinner tonight to eat all week. Email me if you want it!

I made this last week. Everything with butternut squash looks good right now. It’s just fine w/o the goat cheese, I really liked it with the arugula though.

I love your to do lists. But they make me feel bad. I can barely put away the laundry on the weekends. Then again, I have 2 kids and work full time, and would rather do stuff with my kids on the weekends than anything else. But still, there are those projects that nag at me and take 6 months to complete….

This is slightly off topic, but it a constant to-do on my list: how to get my white painted floors (oil paint) cleaner looking. 8+ years of scuffing and dragging stuff across them has left them with light scratching that dirt loves to fill and mops love to spread dirty water out and fill those scratches. How do you keep your white floors clean, especially with the doggies? Thinking of buying one of those floor steam cleaners, but worried they won’t make a difference and then I’ll have it sitting around our apartment, staring at me, making me wish I could repaint our floors…

One of my favorite lunches (at work, or at home) is a whole wheat (sprouted) tortilla wrap…
just fill it with avocado, lettuce tomato, sprouts, hummus,.. whatever you like, roll it up, and cut it in half. So good and easy. I’m vegetarian and don’t eat much cheese or dairy, and this is perfect. Also, you don’t need a microwave.. unless you want to heat it. I usually eat them cold, or if I’m at home, I might warm the tortilla in a pan (with a little coconut oil) and then make my wrap.

Above are comments about facial hair, butternut squash, and dog nails, though it appears no one has asked where you got the “Our Frank” poster?

Tiny backstory: in 2002 my future wife and I were discussing music in a bootleg shop in China, I mentioned that I liked Morrissey and she bought Viva Hate on my recommendation. Four years later our paths crossed Boston when I nearly killed her with my motorcycle. We were married in 2010 (to each other, nonetheless!).

So what, right? Well, she has hung a Morrissey poster in her bedroom ever since 2002 and now she is without one. Your poster seems fantastic and perfect for our new home. Ebay turned up nothing so I’m here commenting on a blog in desperation.

    Thanks.

    • Anna @ D16 February 17, 2011 at 6:23 am

      That’s such a neat story! 🙂

I bought the poster about 20 years ago (!), so I’m afraid I can’t give you any advice on where to buy one now (mine came from Rhino Records in New Paltz, NY, and it cost $7.99—I can’t believe I remember those details, hahah).

Aside from eBay, you could try http://eil.com/ ? Good luck!

    • heathershusband February 17, 2011 at 11:10 pm

Thanks for the compliment and the EIL link. I figured that a neat story would make my question all the more compelling.
