Friends + Family + I Want This

This holiday season, stay independent!

For the fourth year running, I have made a personal commitment to only buying handmade gifts this holiday season. Please encourage your friends and family to buy (and create!) handmade gifts. Whether you do so online, in local shops, or in your own kitchen, the gift of a handmade item can’t be beat. To learn more, visit BuyHandmade.org.

+ Are you planning to buy handmade this holiday season? If so, where will you be doing your shopping? (And what’s on your handmade wish-list?!)

+ As I did last year, I would like to welcome any independent hand-makers to post links to their shops in the comments. Please keep all links limited to the spirit of handmade goods from independently-run businesses.

Anna – what a nice and friendly thing of you to do – I love the idea and rarely buy gifts so I’m totally with you :-))
I don’t sell anything (yet!) although I actually have an Etsy-shop (I give it all away HAHA!) – and now I’m busy sewing quilts for Christmas presents.
I’m making 4 and they are all made from men’s shirts that I’ve bought in charity shops throughout the last year. Man…Those shirts… they are made of great fabric and rarely worn, so no problem in recycling. I can’t wait to give those quilts away!
I will be buying a few presents – so I’ll go to 2 local craft fairs this year. One sell the most amazing homemade honey, mustard and jams – the other beautifull ceramics.
This year I don’t wish for any homemade presents. Actually the only thing on my wishlist is a plumber. Yup – a plumber. Sewage-problems here. Not so chrismassy, I know *lol*
    Happy holidays!

Everyone seems to enjoy them and it’s great to hear from folks as the winter goes on and the bulbs start to bloom. I’ve ordered bulbs from a few different companies and so far Brent and Becky’s bulbs have produced the best results.

Of course I can’t do everything, so I’m supporting my sister and brother-in-law’s business. They make great handmade soap. Definitely embarking on making many presents this year. I love to receive gifts that are a little more thought about and personal so I would think others would enjoy receiving something made by me (and my hub). Before my son came long me and my husband used to make little gifts for our friends and to this day they all still have them. Bless!!

My husband and our friend have created a set of fab music and design inspired posters. Including The Smiths, John Lennon, Nirvana, REM and Radiohead. Wish I was as good at design as them! One day I hope to have my own little shop on etsy.

I love the idea of handmade presents, but after several years of buying all my gifts at an artisan fair, I’ve run out of ideas. I’ve done all the usual suspects: Everyone already has scarves, stationery, purse/wallet, and more hand-crafted salad tongs than they really ever wanted. And since my family is full of modernists, no one wants little decorative items.

    Any ideas?

    • Anna @ D16 November 24, 2010 at 7:31 am

Lisa, what about jewelery? There are so many modernist jewelry designers selling handmade pieces online right now, even if you can’t find them at your local fair—try looking on Supermarket and at some Big Cartel shops, not just Etsy. Also, what about some of the incredible wool-felt/leather cases for iPhones, etc? There are several people making really beautiful gadget-related objects. Or…art! Paintings, sculptures, drawings, prints…the possibilities are endless. 🙂

Thank you so much for promoting and supporting independent sellers!

I have a little shop I’d like to add to this list. It is currently stocked with nautical themed zipper pouches: http://www.etsy.com/shop/iHeartMonAmi

My shop is The Beautiful Project & I sell handmade cards and birthday calendars, printed from recycled card stock. Everything is illustrated & designed by me & printed by a local printer. This Monday I’m offering 15% off with the coupon code: POPPY15.

So many talented handmakers! You have all helped narrow my handmade holiday shopping list and made my month so much easier. Thank-you!

I offer “simple social notes to amuse the lighthearted & antagonize the humourless”.

    Enjoy and happy holidays!

That’s my etsy shop. I live in NC and love crocheting! This holiday season, i’m out of work, so i’ve been trying to use my favorite crafting hobby to make awesome scarfs for people to use as gifts either for themselves or others! I can easily do any color you’d like, so if you see something on there that isn’t exactly what you had in mind, I can easily fix it. Happy browsing :3

I plan on buying all my gifts locally or from etsy this year. You get to give a great gift and help out a hardworking stranger.

I can’t wait to browse all of these shops. I HATE going to the mall and searching for crappy cliche gifts. The whole process just sucks the joy out of the season.

On another note, Anna, I saw your graphic (in this post) being passed around Facebook. I was a little disturbed that no one credited it to your blog, unless you intended for people to pass it along?

    • Anna @ D16 December 1, 2010 at 9:21 pm

Huh! I don’t mind it being shared since it’s being used for good (at least I’m hoping it is—please tell me it was being used in support of buying handmade/independent!), but it’s always nice to be credited.

What can you do, though, you know? Better this than a photo of my house. 🙂

    • jennie December 1, 2010 at 11:04 pm

Oh yes – it was a “post this to your wall and support handmade” thing. I even saw someone that had it as their profile pic! I guess you’ve unknowingly started a campaign.

    • Anna @ D16 December 1, 2010 at 11:06 pm

      I think that’s only a good thing, then. 🙂

I got most of my gifts at the Urban Craft Uprising in Seattle. many of the gifts given to me were from there or etsy. I think shopping local and handmade makes holiday shopping so much more fun!
