“David Lynch Signature Cup Coffee” commercial // Directed by David Lynch, 2011

This is, by far, the finest commercial ever made. Really—watch this (the whole thing) and tell me you don’t want to run out and buy a bag (or a dozen bags) of David Lynch Signature Cup Coffee RIGHT NOW. Even if you’re not a coffee drinker. You want it, right?

A few months ago, Daniel and I went to see a movie* at the IFC Center, and I noticed David Lynch’s coffee for sale at the concession stand, and even though it was in no way presented as a being a joke product, I was kind of baffled by its existence.

Well, no longer. It all makes perfect sense to me now. You know, in the same way that Mulholland Drive and Lost Highway make sense. As in, not at all. But it’s good anyway, and my life won’t be the same without it.

I love David Lynch. I also love coffee.

*We went to see Tiny Furniture, and it was very enjoyable. The 24-year-old writer and director is also the protagonist, and her real-life mother and sister play her movie mother and sister and the whole thing is set in her mother’s (GORGEOUS AND AMAZING) real-life apartment—yet the entire thing is fictional. And she made it for $25,000. Recommended!

Yeah, I know, I design books (oh, woefully outdated portfolio…sigh), but sometimes I design other stuff, too. Aside from the wedding invitations I mentioned the other day, I’ve also been working on a few blog design projects, too. I’m having so much fun! Here are couple I completed recently…

Honey Kennedy

Jen McCabe from Honey Kennedy is fancy. Like, really fancy. She’s girly and frilly and loves vintage nautical imagery, and she needed a blog design to reflect those sensibilities while still providing a clean, orderly environment in which to share the work all of the wonderful designers, photographers, and other prettymakers she regularly features on her site. Jen seems to know about stuff before everyone else—her blog is so well-curated (if you’re not reading it already, you should be!), and I couldn’t be happier that she now has a site design that suits her.

Working with Jen was a joy. She really knows her personal style and has the same eye for detail that I do, and there’s nothing more rewarding than helping someone to turn their vision into a reality. I know that sounds cheesy, but it’s true.

Agonyclite

My friend Ticara recently returned to blogging at Agonyclite after taking a few months off, and she wanted a new look to go with her fresh start. Ticara’s blog tends to be on the personal side, and she didn’t want a bunch of bells and whistles—she really just needed a basic blog design that complements her style. I decided to go really bold with her logo because the word “Agonyclite” is pretty compelling (I kept reading it as “agony lite”—which is kind of hilarious, but no, here’s the real definition), but I tried to keep it looking fun and feminine, too…just like Ticara.

Thanks, Jen and Ticara, for trusting me with your blog redesigns!

I’m really not so much of a jewelry person, I guess. I tend to wear the same pieces over and over again, and most of them, including this fabulous ring, came from (I’m slightly embarrassed to admit) Forever 21 or H&M. With so many talented jewelry designers handmaking special pieces and selling at very reasonable prices, there’s really no reason that I should be succumbing to the allure of cheapie, mass-produced stuff made in China.

I do have to admit that jewelry sometimes makes me feel a little self-conscious, as though I’m trying to make a silk purse out of a sow’s ear (what a horrible expression—and I suppose I’m the sow’s ear in that equation), but as I was looking through my favorites on Etsy earlier today, I was kind of surprised to see that there’s an awful lot of jewelry in there.

Lucky number necklaces no1 and no6 from (of)matter

Attention Major Goofball! Please report for duty! I know, I know…how much of a dork can I be? I love these lucky number necklaces from (of)matter, though, and I’m really tempted to just go for it and order the 1 and the 6 and wear them with pride. Unless of course they move around and people think I’m 61 years old. Or worse, that they stay in place and it looks like I’m trying to pretend I’m 16. (I’m over-thinking this, right?)

Coal geo earrings from A Merry Mishap

I actually just bought these like five minutes ago. I’ve had my eye on them forever, and they’re so inexpensive and simple and really just perfect. Can you believe they’re made out of polymer clay?! I tend to wear dangly earrings that are on the large side, but I’ve been wanting something a little more subdued every now and then. I’m excited. (ARE THEY HERE YET?) A Merry Mishap has them in a bunch of other colors, too, in case you need your own pair.

Medium Python Hoops and Quartz Stud Earrings from Alana Douvros

This stuff is a little more fancy-pants (anytime something smaller than a hamster crosses the $50 mark, I automatically consider it fancy-pants). Alana Douvros specifies that all of her python jewelry is cruelty-free, and that “all pythons died of natural causes”. For me, this conjures touching scenes of snakes gathered around an elderly loved-one’s bedside, holding hands…oh wait, not hands, um…tails entwined as they say their last goodbyes. I imagine the reality is much more mundane, but it’s nice to know that nobody is dying just to be made into a pair of earrings. (She does also offer sterling and bronze cast python earrings if the idea of wearing bone weirds you out, though.)

I have no interest in diamonds, and these quartz earrings come dangerously close to being TOO fancy-pants for me (those of you who like real diamonds are probably rolling your eyes out of your heads right now), but I love them anyway. They look like Real Jewelry to me. I’m not sure I could pull them off, but I aspire to do so.

Stay tuned for part two…

Taken on the Upper West Side last week while I was waiting to meet Evan for dinner at Cafe Blossom.

I was getting tired of seeing the same post at the time of by blog day after day after day, so this post is here to make me feel better about being a blog-slacker. Actually, I just realized it’s Friday, so I might as well turn this into Stuff I Tweeted, right? Editing post title now…

There, that’s better!

If you follow me on Twitter, then you already know that I’m been super-busy lately. Not bad-busy, not sad-busy, not angry-busy…just super-busy. (Super Grover?) I’ve been working on a bunch of design projects for people whose work I really admire, and that feels SO nice. I missing out on a lot of sleep, to be sure, but it’s a good kind of deprivation.

Here’s some of the stuff I tweeted in between drinking coffee and researching fonts:

+ Daniel from Manhattan Nest is in the running in the “Tiny” division of Apartment Therapy’s Small Cool Home contest, and he really deserves to win. Can you believe his amazing apartment is only 425 square feet? Go here, log in, and add him to your favorites.

+ Morrissey has completed his autobiography, and it’s a mere 660 pages long. Even better, it looks as though it could be published by Penguin Classics. And how!

+ Orange soda + French fries = Love.

+ I really loved this article by Melissa Febos at the New York Times website about crying in public: “In some ways, that kind of transparency is as good a defense against interference as the famous blank New York stare.”

+ I designed (and printed, and trimmed, and assembled…) these wedding invitations for my big brother and his awesome fiancée. Sometimes it’s fun to design printed stuff that isn’t a book.

+ I’m still incapable of working at a desk. I do everything on the floor, stuff spread out all over the place. Like a 6-year-old.

+ Did you hear this story on NPR about Chuck Klosterman and “Delicate Steve”? Too funny.

+ I had a bad cold. Then Evan caught it. Now my cold is gone, but my cough lingers.

+ Dear Donald Trump: Please stop. Just…stop. You’re really not fooling anyone.

+ It’s alive! All vegan, all gluten-free, all brilliant and gorgeous! (via @IsaChandra)

+ I MET KATHLEEN! And Jeremy, too. You know, from the aptly-named blog Jeremy and Kathleen. And they are awesome! Totally my kind of people, just like I thought they’d be.

+ The new Beastie Boys video reminds me of how deeply satisfying it is to have been their fan for about 27 years now. They just never disappoint!

The Beastie Boys “Make Some Noise” // Directed by Adam Yauch, 2011

If you’ve been wanting to buy me an extravagant gift for no reason but aren’t sure where to start, look no further: My “it list” of wants is now posted over at sfgirlbybay! Victoria was kind enough to ask me to share a list 12 things that I desire most right now, and I was happy to oblige.

Go take a look! (And be sure to give me a heads-up before the SMEG refrigerator is delivered, okay?)

p.s. Have you seen Victoria’s new dark gray bedroom wall? Too perfect.
