Let’s pretend we’re tourists, #4.

Lobby of the Angelika Film Center, prior to seeing Midnight in Paris (it was GREAT!)

I promise I have some more substantive posts coming up (like about haircuts and gardening and raindrops and other important stuff), but for now I want to share some of the snapshots I’ve been taking around New York City this past week. In addition to all of the things I wrote here about loving using Instagram on my iPhone, I’ve discovered something else that’s kind of neat: I’m looking at my surroundings all the time. I know I’ve delved into this subject a bit in my previous “Let’s Pretend We’re Tourists” posts, but having lived in the lower Hudson Valley and New York City for my entire life, I sometimes think I don’t really experience everything this area has to offer with as much appreciation and downright fervor that visitors do. It’s so easy to walk 20 blocks in NYC without ever looking up—you get so focused on moving forward and blocking out everyone around you that you forget to be an observer.

I’m trying to be more of an observer.

i love how black the eyes of the dogs look, the chewing gums look like eyes too.

Hah! Now I’ll never be able to see it any other way. ;)

Those guys were really good models. I spotted them from about a block away, and I was sure they’d get up by the time I reached them, but they stayed put. Good doggies!

they’re greyhounds! (or maybe whippets?) you didn’t need to worry about them getting up — they’re the sweetest, laziest dogs in the world!

I want you to know that I have really been enjoying your Instagram photos lately and am looking forward to seeing more of them!

Gorgeous! Can I move into that wee brick building, please?

Isn’t it so cute?! I can’t believe I never noticed it before. I must have walked by it a hundred times.

How did you come up with that awesome page that displays all of your Instagram photos? I love it!

Adam, you have one too! It’s an automated thing. Here’s yours. :)

Thank you! I had no idea I had one!

What a gorgeous ceiling at the Angelika! That said.. I really, really want an iPhone now so I can take Instagram photos. I love all of yours.

Honestly, the iPhone has kind of changed my life. I feel like a huge loser saying that, but it’s true! I really believe that 50 years from now, we’ll look back at the development of the iPhone as being as revolutionary as the telephone.

I definitely not a Luddite, but I also don’t take technology for granted. I’m amazed by this little thing and everything it can do.

    love!!

also? as soon as i saw the angelika, i knew you went to see midnight in paris. i must see it soon!!

    Anna @ D16 /

Hee! I guess I’m sort of predictable that way. ;)

Definitely go see Midnight in Paris in the theater. Aside from being hilarious, it’s also really beautiful—it pays tribute to Paris in the same way that Manhattan does for its namesake.

Just came to say I love all of your observer photos. Keep it up :)

You are so right about us (people in general) abdicating our observation skills in an attempt to be cool, get there faster, or whatever. And you are doing admirably in your “quest” to be more of an observer.

Thank you for sharing your eyes with us.

Taking pictures (even little snapshots like these) is definitely slowing me down a bit, and that can only be a good thing.

I love your iPhone photos! You definitely need to stop dissing your own photography skills/eye.

Those brindley whippets are so cute. They make great models as long as they don’t spot something fluffy to chase. As a breed they have two speeds: unconscious and hunt.

I feel the same way about my iPhone/instagram. I didn’t even want one initially (my husband REALLY did so we got two as a family plan) but now I’m hooked. They are such a great tool.

    Anna @ D16 /

I think these guys must’ve been in unconscious mode, then. ;)

Yeah, my husband got an iPhone a few months ago, and I was pretty jealous for a while there!!

Clearly you have signed a contract with Apple. And with NYC tourism. ;) I so badly want an iPhone now. And a trip to NYC. Your photos are amazing.

Hahaha!! Yes, and cute dogs. They’ve all paid me off! ;)

The ceiling of the Angelika looks like it’s receding into space via a computer generated tribute to Carl Sagan.

Anna – I’m loving these photos. After your last post about Instagram I downloaded it onto my newish iPhone but haven’t quite worked out what to do next… I have never been much of a mobile (cell) phone user until I got my iPhone and it really has changed my life too! Who would have thought? I even (almost) know how to text!

aaagh, i am in love with this post! when you posted that photo from the angelika film center the other day i just about died. and these “tourist” photos are making me so wistful. i want to go walking around nyc with you one day!

I love my iPhone and find myself photographing more and more with it, leaving my digital cameras sitting on the shelf. Off to read your post about instagram. I downloaded it quite awhile ago, but have yet to explore it much.

I like your thoughts about pretending to be a tourist. I do the same thing in San Francisco.

All the pics are great but I SERIOUSLY WANT A COPY OF THE PARK PICTURE. Love it. The lamppost, the little winding path. Perfection. And I am on pins and needles awaiting the post about haircuts. It must be the cosmetologist in me… :)
And it is funny b/c I was thinking this weekend that I have lived in Indiana all my life about an hour from Indianapolis and have never been to the Indy 500. I totally get how one can take things for granted… Although, to be perfectly honest, I have no desire to go…

    Awwww… thanks. :)

    Anna @ D16 /

That’s why I love Gravatars! It’s so fun to see the faces along with the names, especially my longtime readers. I’m glad you made one! :)

Anna, I love the haircut post (and that haircut… wow…) but wanted to comment here.

I’m a Instagram addict and it has helped me overcome occasional shyness about pulling out a camera when in my home town and my total internet shyness.

Thanks again for sharing your images and please keep doing so. (Although I am, of course, on the edge of my seat waiting for the next raindrop post.)

Hey, your pics are amazing. I love New York City. I don’t know if I’m sure, but there is a picture from Katz Deli, right? I love that place. I’m brazilian but I live in Milan, Italy and I write a blog about architecture, design, interiors, photography… Go there and check. Ah! I write in portuguese… But you can change the language. The translation is not wonderful but you can understand. I love this place and I will come back always. Ciao! Felipe.

That is indeed Katz’s deli—good eye!
