Art + Design + Four Legs + I Want This

Pillows, dogs, love and desire.

How cute are these pillows?! The moment Elisabeth Dunker (whose work graces many rooms in my house!) sent out an email announcing their addition to the Fine Little Day shop, I added them to my ever-growing list of pillows I love and desire.

Now that Fritz has stopped chewing on stuff (okay, mostly—every now and then he still enjoys a good tassel), I feel like it might be okay to buy a few nice pillows. I love pillows. I want a pillow on every chair, tons of them on the sofa, a bed covered with them—I basically want to live in a giant pillow. I could always get this, I guess:

Christiane Högner’s Cushionized Sofa is the stuff dreams are made of—literally. Can you even imagine tossing your body down on that thing at the end of a long day? It would be like tumbling into a marshmallow fantasy land of sleepytime goodness.

I want everything Donna Wilson has ever made, really, but her recent Nos Da Collection is my most favorite of all. The “licorice” cushion is so, so beautiful. I’ve been fantasizing about it for long time now, but just recently saw it in person for the first time—and now I covet it even more. And how can you not love the Blah Blah cushion?! Perfect for resting your head on while pretending to be engaged in a draggy phone conversation.

OMG, THIS PILLOW. This is one of those things I swear was made just for me. It’s cotton, it’s velvety, it’s got multi-level textures, it’s earthy-yet-graphic, there’s yellow involved, and…TRIANGLES. I love a good triangle. The Turbine pillow from CB2 is awesome, and I may or may not have already ordered one in a fit of glee.

Speaking of triangles…yeah, I saved the best for last. It’s the holy grail of pillows—one made from Alexander Girard’s Checker Split fabric. Circa50 makes pillows from a variety of Girard fabrics, but Checker Split will always be my favorite-favorite. This pattern inspired the one on the sometimes-rug in my living room (I say “sometimes” because the dogs seem to have decided that every rug is a giant wee-wee pad, so actually it’s more like “no time-rug”…sigh), and I just love it so much. I’ve held off investing in a Girard pillow for a long time, though, because I just know that the second I turn my back, Fritz is going to chew off one of the corners.

Indeed, sometimes the dogs win. Maybe I need to have a private pillow sanctuary behind a dog gate. Oh, come on…who am I kidding?

Exactly, Fritz. Exactly.

I’m afraid to leave you alone with my dogs now. Don’t steal!

It’s a relief to know that Constance is not the only one to have this trait of personality for rugs. (There is none of those in my house, and i’m not breaking eye contact with the thing when we’re at friends’ houses where there is rugs.)
And she also always manages to sleep on TOP of the cushious thing around. Or pile them up and then sleep on top of it.
    🙂
    i love dogs.

    • Anna @ D16 August 25, 2011 at 2:55 pm

My dogs LOVE sleeping on piles of blankets and pillows! It’s so cute. 🙂

Peeing on rugs is less cute.

    those tree pillows are amazing.

in other news, that photo of fritz on the pillow pretty much turned a sad stressed out me into a little bit closer to normal human. the power of cute animals.

    • Anna @ D16 August 25, 2011 at 2:58 pm

Cute animals really are the best medicine for just about anything.

Would you consider a modern quilted pillow? I love the first one, it is stunning, and the other ones are fantastic too. I’m just curious as I have a new-found interest in patchwork and quilting, mainly the “cool” kinds, and am about to embark on a couple of projects soon.

    • Anna @ D16 August 25, 2011 at 2:57 pm

Have you seen the quilts from CarsonToo? They are amazing!

Oh god, I love them! Yes, they have been bookmarked for a few months already. The colours are fantastic as well as the quilting pattern, but the triangles are not among the easiest to make; a rather difficult cut.

    • Nina August 26, 2011 at 12:43 am

I just now stumbled upon these very geeky quilts (via craftgossip.com): http://www.mentalfloss.com/blogs/archives/98091 and think many of them are amazing.

Oh thank god. I thought we were the only people in the world whose dogs thought that something soft on the floor = place to pee. Could you do a post about how actually all your stuff is covered in dog hair too? It would make me feel way better about my place.

We ‘need’ (in the visual-tying-a-room-together) a rug so badly, but I just know Lola will be all “You guys are so generous! Now I don’t need to go outside to pee!” I was thinking a $300 Ikea number (the lovely Kattrup), so I don’t cry when when it first gets peed on, and so I don’t feel bad if it gets trashed in a couple of years. But given the couch and curtains are already Ikea, I’m a bit worried we’ll look like a catalogue…

I’m loving the new stuff from CB2 (we’re about to get our first in canada, right around the corner from my office!), but it’s a shame that I recognize a lot of the designs from Ferm Living. have you checked them out lately? They have lots of cute, new stuff, and a similar triangle pattern on their newest wallpapers.

    Newest stuff here: http://www.ferm-living.com/news/

    • Anna @ D16 August 25, 2011 at 10:31 pm

I really don’t think CB2 is copying Ferm. Triangle patterns have been a part of modernist design going back 50+ years—take a look at the Girard prints I linked to in this post, for example, as well as Sven Markelius’ classic Pythagoras textile design from 1952. This is nothing new—Ferm is taking cues from the same sources of influence as the designers for CB2.

IKEA has had similar textile designs in recent years, too—the Alvine Triangle rug I linked to in the post, this collection from 2008 by Anna Svanfeldt, and the one seen on Elisabeth’s bed here (can’t remember the name, sorry).

    • Nina August 26, 2011 at 12:36 am

Plus it seems like “domestic” stuff is all of a sudden rather hot; in Finland where I come from, young people are learning to make rugs from scrap fabrics and there are many other techniques that appeal to the younger generations, as well. For the longest of time everyone wanted to buy new stuff and yes, we still do, but alongside with the green wave becoming mainstream, canning and other food preserving as well as what was traditionally perceived as female skills are now being revived. I’m happy and not so horribly untrendy anymore, lol. Go granny.

    • Heather September 1, 2011 at 9:35 pm

Ooh, I didn’t see your reply till now. I didn’t mean the triangle pattern specifically, but a small part of their pillow line seems to be directly inspired by their “look” anyway. The knitted pouf, the “Button Up” pillow and the triangle patterns all combined really remind me of their stuff from last year.

    • Anna @ D16 September 1, 2011 at 9:41 pm

I dunno, all of that stuff seems pretty similar to things that have been around for a long time. Knitted poufs like that have been really popular for years now (Christien Meindertma kicked off the trend quite some time ago). I just don’t like to point an accusatory finger without it really being valid.

Hello, Ms.Anna: I love reading your blog. As a homeowner, you have inspired me not be afraid of doing small improvements in my own home; however, this note is in reference to the hurricane watch there in NYC. I live in Houston and even though I have never met you, I feel acquainted with you through your posts……..I hope you and yours are safe and on high ground. As one who has grown up here (I’m 54), just be prepared – candles, fresh water, non-perishable foods, and fill your tub with water for the toilet, just in case there is no water afterwards. A portable radio keeps one updated with the latest news. Hopefully, “Irene” will slow down to a Cat.1 or TD as it treks north over land, cooler water and crosses Long Island. My daughter lives in Boston and I have told her the same. Know that “Irene” can change its mind at the very last minute. Remember, NOTHING is definite in regards to a hurricane. That’s what happened here where I live, 12 miles from Galveston Bay…expecting and being told we would be on the north side of Hurricane Ike. Well, Ike changed its course right before landfall, and we were on the south side. There is a “dirty” side to every hurricane, it just depends which way it is moving, north or west. Hopefully, you will only deal with strong wind, lots of rain and maybe a period of time without electricity. Good luck to you and I will keep you and everyone affected with this storm in my thoughts. Sorry I took up so much space, I am just concerned. I look forward to reading more of your great posts. ♥

    • Anna @ D16 August 26, 2011 at 7:44 pm

Hi Mary, I actually just wrote a post about the hurricane—it’s the new one at the top of the blog. 🙂 I think we’ll be just fine here. The longest we’d be without access to amenities would just be a day at the most. We’ve stocked up on the necessary supplies and we’re good to go!

Thank you so much for your concern, though. I hope your daughter will be safe, too!
