APT: Washington Heights + Places + Travels

My weekend looked like this.

Things are still very much all work, all the time around here, but I managed to sneak in a few snaps of Instagram brightness here and there.

Speaking of Instagram, you may have noticed that there is a big update to version 2.0 available right now. My personal advice is to skip the update for the time being. If you’re wondering why, take a look at this very thorough review. I was extremely unhappy with the update, and wound up jumping through a bunch of hoops in order to downgrade to the old version.

And yes, I still love Instagram for all of the reasons I wrote four months ago, by the way—maybe a little too much.

p.s. What happened to September?!

I was sorely disappointed when I updated Instagram. I didn’t expect it to change that much… most of them time when you update apps, you can hardly tell the difference. I’m hoping with the next update, they return it to its former glory, or somewhat closer to it.

Yea, I feel Instagram seriously missed the mark with their most recent update and have switched to the old version as well!

Also regarding September: I know, right?! Like, wasn’t it just August yesterday??

    • Anna @ D16 September 26, 2011 at 1:26 am

I feel like it was LAST September yesterday!!

    • Lori E. September 26, 2011 at 9:24 am

      Seriously. What happened to 2010?????

  • Reply Nikki September 26, 2011 at 1:23 am

What hoops did you jump through? I can’t figure out how to roll mine back.

    • Anna @ D16 September 26, 2011 at 1:28 am

If you haven’t synced your phone since you ran the update, try this. (Even if you have synced, check your trash and your backup!)

  • Reply hila September 26, 2011 at 1:31 am

That’s pretty much what my weekend looked like, only add a couple of piles of books and paper.

OH thank god I read this before updating! Thank you thank you thank you! I would have been very upset!

  • Reply ethanollie September 26, 2011 at 3:35 am

old instagram. oh thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you!

  • Reply Cara September 26, 2011 at 6:00 am

I am not sure if others are having this problem or not but in the old Instagram photos would save straight to My Photos in my iPhone. I let days go by after the update before I realized they weren’t saving anymore. Is there a way to change this? Sometimes I like to use my Instagram pics on the ol blog but can’t now. Thanks!

  • Reply Cara September 26, 2011 at 6:21 am

Ok, I think I figured it out under settings on my phone. Even though it was set to save a copy I had to re-select it.

I love the Beam mugs. So happy and such a steal.

  • Reply Holyoke Home September 26, 2011 at 10:06 am

I use Camera Bag and really love it – for some reason, Instagram just never spoke to me with MY photos, even though I LOVE its effects with other folks (ahem) photos.

  • Reply Laura Casey September 26, 2011 at 2:02 pm

Damn, so if I get Instagram today (thanks for reminding me!), I’ll really only have the new version?

I guess anything that gets me to take more photos/to share things in life is good, so I shouldn’t complain. It’s not as if I even know what I’m missing from an old version! Ha.

    Love
    Laura

    • Anna @ D16 September 26, 2011 at 2:10 pm

Yes, you’ll only have the new version…but I suspect that if you don’t know what you could’ve had, it won’t be traumatic for you. 😉

This is off-topic, but I am hoping that you can give me your opinion on trim paint. What have you found to be the best as far as application, durability, etc.? I recall another post where you mention using BM Simply White, but which product do you like best (Aura, Natura, other)? We are having terrible luck with big box store paint for re-doing our trim and have decided to try BM, which seems to get great reviews. Thanks, Anna!

    • Anna @ D16 September 26, 2011 at 7:58 pm

Kim, we painted most of our trim 6 years ago (before the Natura and Aura lines existed), so they’re done with BM Satin Impervo. Anything we’ve done in the past couple of years has been Satin Aura, though. You can see all of our paint colors and finishes on the FAQ page!

  • Reply Kim September 26, 2011 at 8:06 pm

Oops, I didn’t realize that that info. is on the FAQ page! Thanks for your response! We have heard really good things about the Aura line, but we’ve never used Benjamin Moore paint. We just know that we want something as low-VOC as possible but with great coverage and durability. Thanks again!

I know this isn’t totally on topic, but I don’t know how to send you a private email or message. Given how busy you are and everything, I’m so impressed that you maintain veganism. I’m considering the switch but am intimidated and would love to hear from you any tips/insight.

We are going to be making over an 1100 sq. foot home by the ocean shortly…for our retirement. There are times I wish I could be as bold as you in decorating! I’ve checked in here off and on for a while now, but never commented, but I really appreciate your sense of color and balance…or unbalance!

my review of instagram 2.0 was way too premature. when i reviewed 2.0, my focus evolved around the new filters and it didn’t even occur to me that the original filters had changed. doh. anyway, thanks for the link to my glass eye. i’m going to give my hand a try at restoring the old version.

  • Reply katrina September 27, 2011 at 11:49 pm

again, thanks so much for the heads-up. i successfully reverted to the previous version. 😀 woot woot.

I don’t have Instagram, but pretty sure I have those same coasters! But I’ve had them for yeeears, so maybe not.

    • Anna @ D16 September 28, 2011 at 1:44 pm

They’re from IKEA, maybe 10 years ago.

    • Kelly September 29, 2011 at 10:16 pm

I went & looked at mine…also Ikea. Pretty sure they’re the same, but they look way cooler there in your house! 🙂

    • Anna @ D16 September 29, 2011 at 11:42 pm

      It’s the Instagram effect. 😉

  • Reply Laura September 28, 2011 at 2:29 pm

Way too much working..I broke my foot recently and gave up doing everything.. what an eye opener..

  • Reply Anna September 28, 2011 at 5:07 pm

First – I love your work & I love finding new creative Anna’s. I’m not sure what it is other than I knew no Anna’s while growing up and since becoming a part of the internet world have found a whole wonderful world of Anna’s.

Second – I knew Earlybird was horribly different. I’m in the olden days of the iPhone 3 and I was just excited to be able to use the tilt-shift on my photos. And then I discovered that the iPhone 3 doesn’t support some of the new filters which makes the photo come out black. And earlybird was my favorite filter and now I think it’s really awful. For some reason I feel like the frames are worse now too. It’s such a bummer. Maybe when I finally upgrade to an iPhone 4 or 5 I will downgrade to the older Instagram. Thanks for sharing that article. It was definitely interesting and reassuring for me to read.

  • Reply Tania September 28, 2011 at 10:35 pm

Thank you so much for the heads up, I hadn’t upgraded yet and will hold off. I love earlybird just the way it is now, I’m also still on Iphone 3G. I love Instagram! Constantly fighting the urge to pull over on my way to work to snap photos of the canoe paddlers in the morning (I’m always running late so pulling over is not an option…).

Thanks for the instagram warning. By the way who has your vote on this season of Project Runway? I am going for Anya all the way, and I can’t wait for Josh to get sent home.

I spent this morning pretending I have Instagram and blogged the results at http://skinnylaminx.com/2011/10/16/who-needs-instagram-i-might/, with a nod to your first Instagram post. I may just have to make the leap to iPhone soon (It helps that Blackberry’s giving me a shove too).
