APT: Washington Heights + Art + Design

Apartment kitchen walls.

As part of my ongoing effort to make the city apartment feel more home-like, I decided to hang a couple of framed printed in the kitchen. I’ve been holding on to these prints with the intention of framing/hanging them for about 15 years (!!) now, and it feels great to see them out of a storage tube and onto the wall.

Both prints were silkscreened by Robin Hendrickson, who I met while we were in the Art+Design program at Purchase College. Robin was immensely talented, and I do wonder what he’s up to now. (Hey Robin, if you Googled yourself and wound up here, get in touch!) The Lost Highway poster (black ink on yellow plasticized paper) was done for a special screening of the movie in the campus theater, and the “Hockey Fight” print was a personal project he did to document a multi-face type family that he’d hand-drawn. We have an alternate version of this poster in what is now the guest bedroom at our house (yikes, old photo!).

There’s a tendency to think small when it comes to hanging framed stuff on kitchen and bathroom walls, but I love putting big posters in smaller spaces. The room immediate feels cozier, happier, and all-around more comfortable. I don’t worry about heat or moisture, either. I probably wouldn’t put anything valuable right next to the stove or the shower, but I’ve never had a problem with anything getting damaged.

Oh, and speaking of the apartment kitchen, remember that giant hole in the ceiling? Well, it’s finally fixed. What a huge relief. Not being able to cook (and you know, having a giant hole overhead constantly shedding dirt and concrete) was pretty stressful.

Let this post also stand as a reminded to order your 2012 Stendig calendar! It’s already November, and it’ll be a new year before you know it. And remember, the pages make great wrapping paper when the month is over.

Love those prints! Where do you get your frames?

    • Anna @ D16 November 9, 2011 at 11:00 pm

I’m going to give you ONE guess. 😉

I’m in my first “for a long time” rental & I’ve been looking for ways to make it more modern but homey. I may not be able to do much about the ugly counter tops, but thanks for some good wall inspiration! It looks like a really cool, really chill museum cafe! Haha. So beautiful.

    • Fiona Hanley November 12, 2011 at 1:34 am

Yes, exactly like a cool museum space! That yellow poster, oh my.

  • Reply Simone November 10, 2011 at 6:33 am

    I love it.

Glad your ceiling is finally repaired (the joys of renting, huh?).

The kitchen is looking amazing! I completely agree with going big in small spaces. Small pictures/frames somehow make the size of the room more noticeable. That calendar is perfection.

What’s the name of the dark grey colour? Love it!

    • Anna @ D16 November 10, 2011 at 9:39 am

Sarah, the dark wall (which is more of a blue-black than a gray) is Benjamin Moore Soot. You can find all of my house & apartment paint colors on my FAQ page.

jeez! 48 days?!? That’s nuts. I hope they reimburst you for your time. What a mess! But, I’m glad you got it fixed!!

Your kitchen looks great & thanks for the Stending Calendar reminder!

    Oh, that’s excellent…

I love the Stending Calendar’s. I’ve saved the page from the month and year that my son was born (December 2008) and plan to circle the day and have it framed for his room. I like the idea of using it for wrapping paper as well.

    • Anna @ D16 November 10, 2011 at 12:05 pm

That’s such a nice idea, Emma!

Looks Great! Being a huge hockey fan I love that second print, the fact that it’s my home teams colors makes me love it that much more!

I have a stockpile of Stendig sheets from the last two years. Hoping to make a dent in them during the holidays.

    HOLD THE PHONE!
This is a post about the apartment? YOUR apartment? About the design in YOUR apartment?? Welcome back Anna! We love you!

    More puppies!

I will never have the kind of blog that’s regularly updated on a certain schedule. I may do one post in a month, or I may do 20—it really depends on whether there’s something I want to blog about and if I have the time and desire to do it. That’s it. No “welcome back” necessary, because I haven’t gone anywhere!

48 DAYS?! Holy wow…I swear, if something happened like that in my apartment in SF, it would have taken two, maybe three because of the renter’s rights in place around here. That’s crazy…

    • Anna @ D16 November 10, 2011 at 10:26 pm

Yes, well, that’s the idea situation here as well. Sadly, though, when those rights are not met, you do sometimes have to go to considerable lengths to have the situation dealt with.

What are sugar pretzels?? I saw them on your old post…

    • Anna @ D16 November 10, 2011 at 10:23 pm

Sugar pretzels?! Can you link to the post you’re talking about?

    • Anna @ D16 November 10, 2011 at 10:25 pm

Oh wait, you mean the cookies! They’re just shortbread-like cookies shaped like pretzels with coarse sugar on top. You know those Danish cookie tins? You can find sugar pretzels in there. If you Google “sugar pretzel cookies” you’ll find lots of recipes! 🙂

    • PhillyLass November 12, 2011 at 11:12 am

While you’re fielding questions about the cookies in the old post, any chance you’re willing to share the espresso shortbread recipe? It sounds super yummy and I’d love to add it to my holiday treat list. Love the prints in the kitchen!!!

    • Anna @ D16 November 12, 2011 at 1:43 pm

I’m sorry, I really don’t remember! That was so long ago. I’m guessing it was a Martha Stewart recipe—before going vegan, I used her cookie recipes almost exclusively during the holidays.

Wandered on over here from honeykennedy.

I loooove this aesthetic – where is your kitchen table from? Such a cute size, and perfect for small spaces!

    • Anna @ D16 November 12, 2011 at 6:46 am

It’s the NORBO from IKEA! It’s a great little table. Super-sturdy and just the right size. You can see better pictures of it here. 🙂

    • Jessie November 12, 2011 at 3:20 pm

It’s funny – I’ve seen that at ikea so many times, but never thought twice about it. I may just have to take a field trip and check it out. Thanks!! Looks great with those chairs, too.

    really REALLY like those prints.

  • Reply Tiffanie Turner November 15, 2011 at 5:27 pm

Hahaha, my husband never hung his calendar all year. It’s sitting right here. I know what I’m using it for next month.
