Lisa, I’m proud of your state too. I’m from Georgia which Dems never win. I started to feel down like my vote never matters here. But I thought about my contributions to this campaign and looking at the bigger picture, it helped him win states like yours! I’m so excited. This win means so much more this time around. I’m proud of all of us as a nation. We did it again!

    • Karrey November 7, 2012 at 3:18 pm

I’m proud to be an Iowan, too! And we managed to retain Justice Wiggins, the latest one of our Supreme Court justices to be targeted by conservatives in the state for voting unanimously to allow gay marriage. ♥

    • Anna @ D16 November 7, 2012 at 6:27 pm

I’m proud of Iowa too, Lisa!! It must be so exciting to live in a swing state that’s gradually moving toward being a more consistently liberal-minded place.

  • Reply Bukola November 7, 2012 at 5:12 am

That’s a great picture Anna!! Yay for four more years! Thank you very much for your eloquent words in yesterdays post. It really brought home in one place, all the reasons I am so happy this man won another term.

I’m not an American, but I am so. so. relieved. Congratulations to all of you – and also to the rest of the world!
Seriously, I had no idea how much dread I had been carrying around until that knot in my stomach disappeared upon reading »Barack Obama re-elected as President of the United States«.

    Such happy words 🙂

Same here, for all of this.

I have voted Libertarian in every presidential election since 1972. I believe in the Libertarian message more than in that of either the Democrats or Republicans. This time, though, I voted for Barack Obama, because returning him to office was the only right thing for a conscientious voter to do.

    I’m SO relieved!

And THANK YOU, Anna, for your info on how to help Sandy’s Survivors!

This picture rules the school, love it! Can’t imagine a cooler and better President for a 21st-century America that should be a, if not THE progressive leader in the world. I cried tears of joy and relief when CNN announced him the projected winner. And has there ever been a President before Obama for whom his election was celebrated worldwide, both this year and 4 years ago? I still remember the news clips of celebrations around the world in 2008. As a friend of mine said, the world is watching us, and I’m SO glad we did not embarrass ourselves by voting ourselves back into the 1950s…or the Stone Age. Now let’s hope Obama can push through all the opposition that plagued his last term and get even more done for our country and for the equal rights of EVERYONE.

    • Anna @ D16 November 7, 2012 at 6:31 pm

YES. All of this, exactly. America should be seen by the rest of the world as a place where civil rights triumph and community progress is our purpose. I have been so embarrassed (maybe not the right word—mortified?) by the kind of antiquated, bigoted rhetoric that the GOP has been stooping to during this campaign. I cannot see how the Republican party can survive like this.

    • Heather November 13, 2012 at 6:23 pm

Unfortunately there are still a LOT of people in America who fear anything they don’t understand and/or are unfamiliar with, and the extreme right seems to feed on and foster that fear. I know, work with, and am related to people who’d rather believe and support the fear-mongering propaganda even if it means people they care about would be denied what should be basic rights for all humans under current Republican ideologies. What really scares me is that this race was actually pretty close, and if Mittens hadn’t run his idiot mouth unchecked a few times too many (e.g. the infamous “47%” comment), the election could’ve easily gone the other way. Let’s hope that more of the crazy haterade has been weeded out of the political system by 2016, and little by little, maybe we’ll eventually get to where we should be as a nation.

  • Reply Anne November 7, 2012 at 3:32 pm

Yes. I am proud and happy.

    Congratulations from a Berlin girl!
I stayed up until about half past five, awaiting the final result.
Did you hear that sigh of relief?
About 80% of the European citizens would have voted for Obama – he is very popular here. So now (almost) everybody is relieved and happy!

    • Anna @ D16 November 7, 2012 at 6:32 pm

I think I did hear that sigh of relief, Katja. 🙂 For better or worse, whoever is in power in the US has a huge impact on much of the rest of the world. I’m glad we could do you proud.

It’s brilliant to be able to keep the world’s coolest (and sexiest and everything else awesome) Commander in Chief.

The comments remind me of the website of apologetic pictures posted when GW Bush “won” the election and the responding website of photographs from people around the world expressing forgiveness. I still tear up to think about it.

And I tear up to think about the peril we escaped/avoided with President Obama’s re-election.

    It’s a beautiful world.

  • Reply lilcg November 7, 2012 at 8:29 pm

I was starting to get terrified in the last few weeks of this election–I still don’t understand how some of my family and friends supported romney (they seem like reasonable, intelligent, compassionate people…). but now it is over and I am so proud and relieved. and on a more local note–I can’t believe VA went blue for the president AND the senate! yea for us!

I wish I knew, Amanda! Sorry. 🙁 It’s one of those photos that’s been used for a million caption memes for a while now, and I can’t seem to find where it originated. I added a note to the post—hopefully someone will know.

It doesn’t really help, I know, but I had this photo as one of my LiveJournal icons back in the day (during the 1st election), so it’s at least 4 years old. It’s the best!

  • Reply nickarmadillo December 25, 2012 at 7:02 am

Ugh. Missed this post earlier, and I’m glad I did. The commentary is a bit nauseating.

It’s sad to see so many bigoted people who can’t see that both sides want the best for our country, they just have different visions of how to get there.

Closed-mindedness is equally ugly and pervasive on both ends of the political spectrum and it’s in full display here.
