Vanity + Wearables

Weekend uniform.

It’s been a month since my last outfit post, which seems about right when considering how frequently I change my clothes! I kid, I kid. OK, not really—I know I like to joke about only having three outfits, but it’s kind of true. I have a small handful of staples that are all interchangeable. I like casual, comfortable, modest and somewhat masculine (boyish?) clothes.

weekend outfit

1. Surplus Parka, BDG
2. Cube Scarf, Micaela Greg
3. Veronica Slouch Boots, Frye
4. Letter Bag, Moop
5. Sofia Skinny Jeans (Dark Faye), Lucky
6. Arcos Earrings, Stone & Honey
7. Super Duper Strength Sunglasses, Karen Walker

This is more or less what I’ve been wearing every weekend these days. I love parkas—I have a black one with a very warm, detachable lining, and an army-green one that’s a lighter weight (mine came from the clearance rack at the Gap, but I’ve tried on this one from UO and it’s good stuff—it does run large, though, and if it’s -10°F where you live it’s probably better for fall/spring). The nice thing about loose-fitting parkas is that you can wear lots of layers underneath without feeling like a bulky sausage. Also: POCKETS. I love big pockets. Tissues, iPhone, lip balm, sunglasses, hair elastics, gloves…they all go in the pockets. (Still loving Lucky’s Sofia skinny jeans, too—more about them in my last outfit post!)

I don’t actually own that Micaela Greg scarf, but I’m thinking it might be a good present for myself as a reward for all of the tiling I did in the kitchen. (Hello, justification!) I have their triangle neck cozy, and it’s so soft (not a speck of itchiness!) and nicely made. I can never bring myself to squish a hat down on my head, so in the winter months I rely on giant scarves to wrap around my head and over my ears when it gets really chilly out.

I’ve expressed my love for Frye boots before, but I don’t think I’ve ever specifically mentioned their Veronica slouch boots. Truth: I own three pairs of these boots. Dark brown (pictured here), cracked white leather (yes, really), and these gray stone-washed ombré ones. Frye have been making this style of boot for a long time, and I’ve bought one pair every two years. Unlike most Frye boots (which have leather soles that can be slippery on ice), they have a thick, rubber lug sole that wears really well when the sidewalks and streets are icy, so they’re great in winter. Once a year I get them waterproofed by my cobbler and have him put a new piece of rubber on the heel, and that’s enough to keep them in excellent shape.

Weekend? Ready!

jealous of your skinny calves 😛 i think i’ve tried every kind of frye boot and my muscular (ok ok i kid, they’re just fat) calves won’t fit 🙁

    • Anna @ D16 January 4, 2013 at 3:16 pm

Have you tried these?? I definitely don’t have particularly skinny calves—I just measured mine, and they’re about 16″ around at their thickest point. And that ain’t muscle. 😉 I know the description on Zappos says these are 15″, but they’ve gotta be bigger than that because they fit me just fine with room to spare!

Of course, I have huge feet, so maybe bigger boots are bigger all over? I don’t know, but it’s definitely NOT that I have skinny calves…or skinny anything!!

  • Reply Ryann Moore January 4, 2013 at 1:05 pm

Sometimes I really wish it were acceptable to wear the same exact thing, every day. Love it! It is very similar to what you can catch me wearing about 80% of the time – between my military jacket, skinny black jeans, scarf, brown boots or oxfords, the only thing that really gets switched up is what neutral shirt I am wearing that day. Also, still dying to get my hands on the purse in your photo!

You continue to be a great style example!

    • Anna @ D16 January 4, 2013 at 3:19 pm

The bag I’m carrying in the mirror photo is from Bookhou! I bought the Moop one in the post in gray for Evan, but I think I might have to steal it…

    • Ryann Moore January 4, 2013 at 4:35 pm

Both are really great. Thank you for reminding me of where the bag in the mirror was from – I couldn’t remember the name of the company! Adding it to my wishlist now!

Amazing scarf! I think you should get it so I can live vicariously through you.

      i support!

  • Reply Laura Casey January 4, 2013 at 1:17 pm

You do usually wear a shirt as well! Come on, tell us about them, too!

And you have a great uniform. I feel like your wardrobe is SO much more pared down and less-schizo than mine!

    Love
    Laura

    • Anna @ D16 January 4, 2013 at 3:21 pm

Haha, yes, I do wear shirts!! I didn’t bother including one in the post because my shirts kind of never show? I’m always wearing some sort of jacket or cardigan, and between that and a big scarf my shirts are pretty much incidental.

Right now I’m wearing a really old gray t-shirt from J Crew with holes all over it and a long black cardigan from H&M that so static-y I might lose my mind before the day is over. Happy now? 😉

    • Laura Casey January 9, 2013 at 7:15 pm

Yes, thank you! I was pretty sure you usually wore shirts! At least around me (to be polite?). Ha!

Static: hairspray!! It’s gross, but works in a pinch. Obv make sure you’re spraying it far enough away that it’s only a fine mist.

      Love
      Laura

I’m so grateful you introduced me to these jeans! I’ve ordered two pairs and wear them all the time.

    • Anna @ D16 January 4, 2013 at 3:23 pm

Aren’t they great?! I was so bummed when BOTH of my old favorites (Lucky Lolas and Gap Curvy-Skinnies) were discontinued, but I think I like the Sofias better than either of them!! They might be a little too heavy in the summertime, but for winter they’re great. So well-structured and flattering. Glad you like them!

  • Reply Megan January 4, 2013 at 2:50 pm

I have a pair of the Frye Veronica boots, too, and love them to PIECES. The only problem I have with them is that I’ve owned them for about six years and still have yet to fully break them in– they absolutely SHRED the backs of my heels if I do too much walking in them. They’re so beautiful that I’m willing to put up with it, of course.

LOVE the scarf and the jeans as well!

    • Anna @ D16 January 4, 2013 at 3:27 pm

You know, someone else commented about the same thing on Instagram, so I wonder if it’s a foot shape thing? Like I said in the post, I have three pairs of these boots…and none of them have required any breaking in AT ALL. They’ve all been so comfy right off the bat that I can wear them out of the store and walk around the city all afternoon in them without any rubbing whatsoever!

Have you tried bringing them to a cobbler to have them stretched a tiny bit? I’ve done that with other shoes in the past (I have huge feet), and I’ve always had good luck.

  • Reply rox January 4, 2013 at 2:59 pm

    love. your. style. like…to death!

  • Reply Alex January 4, 2013 at 3:16 pm

    Cute, as usual!

I bought some dresses and shirts from Kowtow after seeing your post on them, and I actually had to fill out an importer form and it was sent to Homeland Security by FedEx. FedEx had the package in their facility for over a week until all the paperwork was complete.

It was kooky! But, the clothes were totally worth it.

    • Anna @ D16 January 4, 2013 at 3:29 pm

Wow, I’ve wondered about that! I’m so hesitant to order clothes from overseas. Glad to hear the clothes were worth it…maybe I’ll bite the bullet and order something one of these days. They have such great stuff!

  • Reply Jaime January 4, 2013 at 3:47 pm

Okay, I did it. I ordered the Sophia jeans today. Jeans…through the mail…crazy! And skinny jeans at that! But you recommend them so highly that I’m going to give it a go.

    • Anna @ D16 January 4, 2013 at 4:31 pm

Did you order them from Zappos? At least if they don’t fit right you can exchange them easily! And they’ll probably arrive tomorrow, haha.

I hate trying on clothes in stores (I wind up not buying anything because the lighting is so atrocious), so I’m actually more likely to buy/keep/wear stuff if I order it online.

  • Reply Steph January 4, 2013 at 4:11 pm

I love your style! My “uniform” is similar, though not quite as stylish, and yes, I pretty much wear the same things all the time. I’ve been thinking about getting a pair of Frye Boots, and the Veronica Slouch is on my list. How slouchy are they though?

    • Anna @ D16 January 4, 2013 at 4:33 pm

They’re not really “slouchy” at all—the product image is pretty true to how they look on. I think they just call them that because they’re not a very structured boot. They’re more like engineer boots than cowboy boots. Know what I mean? They fit loose around the ankle, and they don’t hug your calves. I like that for winter, because it means I can wear my jeans tucked into thick socks and not have any lumpiness showing through the boot!

    • Steph January 4, 2013 at 4:42 pm

Thanks, yes, that a great explanation. I’ll give them a try!

  • Reply Amy January 4, 2013 at 5:12 pm

I just got the Veronica slouch and I have huge calves – probably almost 17 inches. They also make a wide calf version. I love them – they were so expensive but so worth it.

    • Anna @ D16 January 4, 2013 at 5:20 pm

Interesting! I wonder if I bought the wide calf version without realizing it?! I dunno. I’ve never thought my calves are particularly big (and I’ve never had trouble fitting into tall boots), but maybe that’s just because my feet are so ginormous. 😛

  • Reply Amy January 4, 2013 at 7:07 pm

Ha! I have the Veronica slouch boots in a mustard color. I’ve had them for at least 7 years now I love them to pieces. They really are like wearing slippers. Buttery soft leather.

love this outfit! I got those earrings for Christmas from the husband, and have worn them almost every day since. It was the one thing I really wanted! I love that coat and I think you should totally treat yourself to the scarf- your tiling job is VERY impressive especially while sick!!!

Anna! You got the letter bag! I’ve been debating on that bag for two years now! I have their old version of a backpack but I really need something shoulder strappy. Does it work cross body too? Do you think the waxed canvas is worth it? I need pockets, I can’t have a bag that’s just one open big pocket, and this seems like it would fit the bill….
    Thanks for the post!!!

    • Anna @ D16 January 9, 2013 at 12:46 am

Eek! Sorry, I missed this comment the other day!

Yes, it works cross-body—it comes with a detachable strap. Check the product page, it describes the pockets and straps and all that good stuff. 🙂

I don’t have it in waxed canvas (I actually don’t have it at all, Evan does!), so I can’t speak to that, but in general I like waxed canvas.

Those boots are beautiful. So happy to read that it fits calves larger than 15″. I just moved to Inwood and have been meaning to find a cobbler nearby. I have an old pair of Docs (Athenas) that need some TLC. At five years old, the leather is getting prettier every day…but the sole is coming loose. Is there one you like anywhere in Washington Heights or Inwood?

    • Anna @ D16 January 5, 2013 at 4:25 pm

I don’t, sorry! I’ve been going to Eddie’s in midtown for years.

This is completely off-topic, but I had to share. I came across these and the first thing that popped into my head was, “Anna coasters!”

Hi Anna! I’ve been lusting after those boots for ages. One reviewer said that, as the leather in the ankle area broke in, the whole shaft of the boot got droopy and ill-fitting. Obviously, they’re meant to be somewhat slouchy, but have any of yours gotten too floppy in the shaft?

BTW, I’m doing a 21-day program to transition to a vegan diet and I put your chili recipe on the menu for week one. So yummy!

    • Anna @ D16 January 9, 2013 at 12:42 am

No, definitely not floppy! They ARE loose in the ankle (they’re supposed to be), but the shaft is still pretty much the same—and I’ve worn them at least 75-100 days out of the year for the past three years. The photo of me in the post shows the shape pretty accurately! They’re definitely not structured boots, but for me that’s the beauty of them. 🙂

Glad you’re liking the chili! Good luck with your transition—you can do it!!

Anna — I love the bag that you posted above. Do you own it? If so, is it roomy? And, the tile looks really, really beautiful!!

    • Anna @ D16 January 9, 2013 at 12:38 am

I don’t have it, but Evan has it in gray! I’m going to steal it. 🙂

Yes, it’s roomy. It’s not so huge that you can’t carry it with you on a regular day, but it’s big enough that if you’re a light packer you could probably get away with using it as an overnight bag.

I have a similar Bookhau bag and I love it (I had her make me a custom one with a vegan/canvas set of straps). I’m wondering how you like your Moop bag? I purchased one a few years ago and found the adjustable strap was just awful and didn’t stay in place and it was too hard to keep stuff organized in the bag – I think I spent over $100 on it and ended up giving it away at a clothing swap to someone who could care less about an organic cotton handmade bag. Saddest moment ever. I’m wondering if some of their more structured bags are better – the material seemed so thin.

    • Anna @ D16 March 14, 2013 at 10:10 pm

My Moop bag is actually my husband’s! I may or may not have adopted it from him. 😉 It’s not the one in this post, it’s the ‘Messenger’ style—I bought it for him about three years ago. Neither of us have had any trouble with the strap or with the fabric seeming too thin, but it’s not organic cotton…or at least I don’t think it is. Maybe that’s the difference? It’s always performed like a top-quality bag.

  • Reply bonnie September 27, 2013 at 6:35 pm

so, I know this is an old post, but I’ve been searching in vain for the answer: I know you own many Frye shoes and have had great luck with them. I have “problem” feet that get easily sore, and I walk a ton, so I usually wear “comfort wear” like Birkenstocks or Merrells. But I want a pair of Veronica Slouch boots SO BAD!

My question: do you typically get sore in the heel if you walk around in cheaper shoes? Would you say that the Veronica Slouch is the same comfort level as birks or merrells when walking for many miles?
