Say hello to Schoon Soap! (+ a giveaway)

doorsixteen_schoonsoap_1

I’m SO happy and excited to announce the official launch of Schoon Soap! For the past few months, I’ve been working on designing the branding and packaging for an amazing new line of vegan soaps. (It’s been hard to keep my mouth shut about this project, believe me!)

Stephanie Klose has been making soap since 2005, but it wasn’t until this year that she decided to fully immerse herself (literally and figuratively) in the business of creating the perfect lather. After a lot of experimentation, she’s come up with a initial line of 12 varieties of soaps, including fragrance-free and fragrance-ful options. Schoon means “clean” in Dutch, and the name pays homage to the Dutch heritage of the New York regions both Stephanie and I have called home: Brooklyn and the Hudson Valley, the latter of which was also my inspiration for the mountain-y logo.

doorsixteen_schoonsoap_2

One of the best things about working on the packaging for these soaps is that in order to fully appreciate their characteristics, I (naturally) had to use them. I’m usually a no-frills, unscented, liquid castile soap kind of gal when it comes to shower time, so making the switch to these truly luxurious bars was a pretty big upgrade for me. The first soap I tried was Bay Rum & Vetiver, which passed my smell test immediately: warm, earthy, spicy. The coconut oil and shea butter base felt so great on my usually dry skin, and I had no irritation at all from the essential oils used to give it its wonderful fragrance.

Most recently, I’ve been using the Pure/Unscented bar, which still feels fancy and luxurious even though it’s fragrance-free! Great news for anyone who can’t tolerate any kind of perfume. ALL of the varieties are free from any synthetic fragrances, parabens, or preservatives, and the entire line is totally vegan. (And they’re all made by hand right here in Brooklyn!)

doorsixteen_schoonsoap_3

I realize I’m totally biased in saying this, but they also look great in my bathroom—wrapped and unwrapped. Each soap wrapper has its own unique pattern and color, so they feel really special and personal. That was the most important thing to me in designing the packaging—I didn’t want the individual varieties to blend into one another visually (though they do also look nice together in a group!). The coolest part of the project? Seeing the logo I designed for Stephanie embossed into a finished bar. So satisfying.

To celebrate the launch of Schoon Soap, Stephanie and her husband, Rob (who handles the customer service side of things), are offering a 20% discount on all of their soaps until October 6th! Just use the code SCHOONTIME during checkout at Etsy.

The grapefruit bergamot, lemon lavender (one of my very favorite scent combos!), and the Tioga, for when my boyfriend visits. And those just the first three I want to try!

  • Reply Lina B. September 29, 2014 at 1:05 pm

Swoon! That packaging is perfection–nicely done! And what a fun project too!

I will certainly be ordering, but winning would be lovely too. My top three are: Lavender Eucalyptus, Grapefruit & Bergamot, and Bay Rum & Vetiver.

  • Reply Emily Love September 29, 2014 at 1:05 pm

lavender eucalyptus, pure/unscented, and lemongrass basil!

  • Reply Jon N September 29, 2014 at 1:06 pm

These soaps sound amazing! And look fantastic, to boot!

The most wonderful three varieties, to me, would be:
    Lavender Eucalyptus (of course!)
Tioga (citrusy AND woodsy, oh my!)
Herkimer (basically the Thieves Essential Oil – as a soap – awesome)

  • Reply Jools September 29, 2014 at 1:09 pm

Tioga, Olive Oil & Cocoa Butter & Grapefruit & Bergamot for the win! I love my castille soap but these sound like the right kind of indulgent.

  • Reply Kylie September 29, 2014 at 1:13 pm

GRAPEFRUIT & BERGAMOT, LAVENDER LEMON and the LAVENDER EUCALYPTUS

  • Reply Cheryl September 29, 2014 at 1:13 pm

  • Reply Chiara.M. September 29, 2014 at 1:19 pm

Almond milk&otmeal, lavender eucalyptus and olive oil and cocoa butter are my favourite! ♥ I’d like to try them!

  • Reply Laura September 29, 2014 at 1:20 pm

A scent-free soap is a wonderful idea, I wish more fancy-soap makers had a scentless variety! I tend to use scent-free day to day (in general, I get bugged by overwhelming smells), but a scented soap is a nice treat every once in awhile. I’d want the woodsy ones (Rensselae and Tioga) and you sold me on the Bay Rum and Vetiver as well!

    • Anna @ D16 September 29, 2014 at 1:31 pm

Laura, I didn’t mention this in the post, but they actually have THREE unscented varieties! I haven’t tried them all yet, but I love that there’s been a consideration to make those soaps special in ways that don’t involve fragrance.

    • Erin September 29, 2014 at 5:09 pm

Wow, that IS nice! People sensitive to perfume never get more than 1 option! Or beautiful packaging!!

  • Reply Rosalyn September 29, 2014 at 1:24 pm

Grapefruit & Bergamot, Lemongrass Basil, and the Herkimer scents sound wonderful!

  • Reply Aysem September 29, 2014 at 1:33 pm

Almon milk & Oatmeal, Bay rum & Vetiver, and Tioga are my favorites. (Really like the packaging!)

  • Reply Phoebe September 29, 2014 at 1:36 pm

Lavender Eucalyptus, Rensselaer, and Ulster sound absolutely scrumptious!

  • Reply Colleen September 29, 2014 at 1:37 pm

I’m not big on the scents either so I’d go for the pure, olive oil & cocoa butter, and almond milk & oatmeal. Love the logo on the bar. That’s killer.

  • Reply whitney September 29, 2014 at 1:38 pm

Love the logo embossed in the soap. Such a nice detail!

They all sound amazing, but my top three would be: Grapefruit & Bergamot, Lemongrass & Basil, Almond Milk & Oatmeal

i want to try them all! First I would try Bay Rum & Vetiver since I love the scent of vetiver, and then I’d also get Tioga and Ulster. I really like that the collection includes a lot of woodsy/spicy scents since they are more unisex.

    Love the packaging!

  • Reply Nico September 29, 2014 at 1:56 pm

Rensselaer, Tioga, Ulster–that’s a hard choice when faced with the others, but these seem like the true proprietary blends. I’m excited to try these!

Lavender Eucalyptus, Ulster and Rennselaer. All the soaps sound awesome!

Grapefruit/Bergamot to start (then I’ll go have a piece of toast with my lemon/bergamot marmalade)

    Tioga next

and then Herkimer so as to avoid the plagues circulating at work (small children and their parents, carriers of disease 🙂 )

Herkimer, Bay Rum & Vetiver, and Almond Milk & Oatmeal

  • Reply katecooks September 29, 2014 at 2:19 pm

  • Reply Leslie September 29, 2014 at 3:29 pm

Beautiful packaging. I looked at the image before reading the post. and thought that design was very much your style — the shape/weight of the mountain symbol, and the negative space scooped out of the pattern below.
These all sound wonderful, but these are particularly appealing:

Tioga (trying to steer the BF to natural woodsy scents and away from the gacky drugstore pre-shave he uses)

Olive Oil and Cocoa butter (because he has very dry skin and gets itchy)

Herkimer (because what a great story, and that combo sounds both warming and refreshing)

  • Reply Darcy September 29, 2014 at 3:30 pm

Lemongrass Basil, Rensselaer, and Lavender Lemon would be my picks! Nice work on the design as well. They look very clean and modern.

I like anything citrus-y, so the Grapefruit and Bergamot pleases me, my husband is partial to lemongrass basil (so if I win, I’ll be nice and give him a bar) and Tioga is for me alone because reminds me of that time I travelled across Canada, staying in terrible hostels and surviving the gross, slimy showers only because of an amazing smelling bar of cedarwood soap.

The logo looks great. And a luxurious bar of soap is such a lovely thing (I mean I like a luxurious bottle of body wash, but soap has gotten a bad rap these days when it can be so so awesome). I was first drawn to Grapefruit bergamont because obviously (two scents I’m always drawn to), then Tioga sounds intriguing and lovely (mmm trees), followed by lemongrass basil. And then… well I guess I’ll stop since you said to tell you the first three I was drawn to.

Bay Rum & Vetiver, for sure. Also Herkimer and it’s a toss-up between Rensselaer and Tioga! (Love the woodsy, spicy scents…)

  • Reply Jessica September 30, 2014 at 3:35 pm

Oh I can’t pick just three! Right now i like the grapefruit + bergamot, the almond milk + oatmeal, the lemongrass + basil, but I would also be seriously tempted by the unusual combination of olive oil and cocoa butter, and it’s always nice to find a new unscented option.

This may not be the best place for this feeback but better than nowhere at all! I have to mention that typically ‘unscented’ just means that a product is of no particular scent, and sometimes even has neutralizing fragrances added. People like me who can be very sensitive are often trained to entirely look over these offerings as they can often be worse than products using naturally derived scents. I’m glad she lists the ingredients and put in the product description that the soap is ‘fragrance free’, but I sort of wish she’d just stuck with ‘pure’ as the name and dropped unscented for this reason.

    • Anna @ D16 September 30, 2014 at 3:44 pm

Jessica, thanks for that feedback! If there were to be a special category in the shop, what would a better term be for those three soaps (Pure, Olive Oil & Cocoa Butter, and Almond Milk & Oatmeal) than, well, “unscented”? “Fragrance-free”?

Great work on the packaging, these are gorgeous! Looks like fantastic soap, too, especially the unique scents. Tioga looks fabulous, as does the Bay Rum & Vetiver one you mentioned and the rensselaer. Love the more masculine scents; it’s absolutely not true that women want their soap to smell like vanilla and overpowering florals.

  • Reply Jennifer October 9, 2014 at 11:02 am

Okay, I’ll bite. Mmm, grapefruit, and I’m not sure I can resist the Herkimer.

  • Reply Danielle October 9, 2014 at 10:18 pm

  • Reply Sarah October 10, 2014 at 10:34 am

What gorgeous gorgeous packaging! Great job on the design Anna! So lovely to see really beautiful natural products too. I’m so sensitive to scent in beauty products – find chemically smells generally overwhelming as well as hard on my skin. These look so beautiful and is great to see an ingredient list made up of words I recognise and can pronounce!

If I were to win I would love to try the Almond Milk and Oatmeal (for soothing evening cleansing), Grapefruit and Bergamot (for a refreshing morning wake-up), and Ulster (because I’m Irish! – and the scent combination sounds heavenly!).

Congratulations again to you Anna and to Stephanie!
