IKEA 2016 catalog launch!

doorsixteen_IKEA2016_8

On Wednesday night I went to a press event thing for the launch of the 2016 IKEA catalog. It was held in a really cool event space near the Empire State Building called Gary’s Loft. I don’t know who Gary is, but his loft and roof deck are very nice!

The main thing I wanted to see at the launch was the much-anticipated SINNERLIG collection, designed for IKEA by Ilse Crawford and coming to US stores this October. I was so blown away by the line that I am going to have to do a separate post just about all of the different pieces, but my photo above is a little sneak peek. Look at all that cork!

I always feel kind of weird when I get invited to media stuff, as though I’ve somehow infiltrated a secret group and I just need to try and pretend I know what I’m doing and hope that nobody figures out that I’m just a book cover designer with a blog and not, like, an actual reporter who takes notes and writes articles that don’t use the words “stuff” and “thing” in every other sentence. I also always notice that I’m taking more photos than everyone else, and that I’m taking them “blogger style”—getting my feet and hands in some of the shots so they feel more personal, doing top shots of table settings, and taking photos of the space itself, especially if there’s an awesome view involved.

By the way, that water with the oranges in it was just a prop. Hah! Thank goodness I was warned immediately, because otherwise I would have gone straight to it and filled up a glass. Fortunately there were none-prop cocktails provided, a mix of lingonberry juice, Aquavit, soda water, and fresh mint. Very nice!

Aside from SINNERLIG, I was really impressed by the SITTNING collection. Rich colors, thick, heavyweight cutting boards, iron serving cutlery, and my personal favorite, these beautiful acacia wood ring trivets. A lot is going to be made of the fact that placemats in the SITTNING line have a little pocket for stashing your iPhone, but there’s a lot more going on than just a funny gimmick. I’m really looking forward to the line hitting US stores in September.

Finally, these corner chairs (and the rug) were actually part of the 2014 PS collection, but this was the first time I saw them in person. The corner chairs are really comfy, and putting two of them together makes a very nice small sofa that doubles as a room divider. They’d be great in a loft/studio apartment—I could even see the back doubling as a headboard for a bed on the other side.

The 2016 IKEA catalog will be in US stores in a few weeks, but you can view it online now or request to have a printed copy mailed to you.

That rug has been in our IKEA for a while now (Boston)! We bought it and love it but boy does it show dirt and pet hair easily.

I also have the rug (Chicago) and love it, but agree–it does show/pull EVERY piece of lint. Not ideal for high traffic area. Very excited for Sittning to be available here…

That’s how I feel about my striped RAND rug! It basically needs to be vacuumed daily because every piece of lint shows, but I love it anyway.

You are so clever with the chair/headboard idea. I almost want to live in a studio so I can do that (almost).

The idea of having to request a printed catalogue is so weird to me. I live in England and they just get delivered to everyone when they come out here!

    • Anna @ D16 July 24, 2015 at 12:23 pm

I wish ALL companies would require opting-in to receive a printed catalog! The amount of waste from mass-delivery of unwanted direct mail is horrendous.

I recently went to a website to opt-out of credit card offers through the mail & found that you could also opt-out of a lot of large mailing lists. My physical mail has cut down so much after that. https://www.consumer.ftc.gov/articles/0262-stopping-unsolicited-mail-phone-calls-and-email

    • Anna @ D16 July 24, 2015 at 2:02 pm

Hi Katie, unfortunately, anything addressed to “current occupant” or “resident” seems to evade the DMA list—at least that’s been my experience.

It definitely makes a huge difference with solicitation mail addressed to specific names, though, which is great!

Those rounded acacia cutting boards look Very Nice. As do those loooooovely black cork stool. Way excited to see more of this.

We’ve had those PS chairs and rug in our San Diego store for quite a while. Like you, loving the wood cutting boards and acacia trivets! I can’t wait for your next post getting deeper into the collection. Looks like it’s going to be awesome!!

    • Anna @ D16 July 24, 2015 at 12:27 pm

Interesting! We’ve had the rug here since last year, but this was my first time seeing the chairs in person. I can’t find them on the US website, either. Maybe only certain stores got them!

    • Esha July 24, 2015 at 12:59 pm

Yeah, I have the PS chair too! I bought it in the Stoughton store (the closest store to Boston). I set up a little reading nook in my bedroom with it! http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/80268467/

Thanks! Post updated to reflect my stupidity and ignorance, haha. 😉

OMG ! OMG ! Did you see the sinnerlig daybed ? How is it ? Did you get to sit/lie on it ? Like for real ?

Sorry I’m having a bit of an Ikea fan moment…

    • Anna @ D16 July 24, 2015 at 2:05 pm

They didn’t have one to show us, unfortunately, just pictures! They specifically apologized for not having the daybed. I made them promise me it’s coming out in the US, too. Hah!! It’s sooooooo nice, I know….

  • Reply Katrina July 24, 2015 at 8:45 pm

So did you actually take those pictures or are they renderings?? Haha, just kidding.

I always look at that PS rug but it’s good to know it shows everything as I was going to put it in a toddler room.

I was at IKEA today and meant to buy those pink pillows and forgot.

I can’t wait to see that cork furniture and for my new catalogue. It looks amazing!

    • Anna @ D16 July 25, 2015 at 12:16 am

      Haha!! EVERYTHING IS A RENDERING.

The pink pillows are niiiiiiice. It’s just the right pink!

Hoping some of the bits you’ve picked out will be in the UK stores !!!! Loving it so far……

  • Reply Catherine July 25, 2015 at 9:13 am

I love the cork and the ring trivets. I am a sucker for a good trivet. And because it’s early here and I haven’t yet had my coffee, I’ll just ask: do you know the name of the ring plant stand in the picture with the corner chairs from 2014? Thanks!

PS: thank you for keeping your blog even though it’s name sake isn’t part of your life any longer. I’ve learned a lot about lipstick, NY and food from you! And decorating, of course.

  • Reply Cristina July 25, 2015 at 10:17 am

Loving the colors and lines here! I’m excited to look through the catalog.

BTW, I’ve been house hunting (way too early) and it made me smile to see D16 come up in my Zillow search. I thought, “I love that house! Wait…I know that house!” Lol.

love it all! i too have RAND, and with four kids, a dog and a cat, as well as renovations going on all around, it sure does get filthy. on the upside, it doesn’t take much to vacuum, and they look damn good. this new range though! wow! (love your new blog design too, by the way!)

I read this post like three weeks ago and somehow forgot to ask you if you noticed that the entire karlstad chairs and couches have been discontinued along with the wonderful fabric isunda gray. I noticed that long time ago but when the catalog came I saw it and could not avoid feeling sad. Plus I think you said you loved the karlstad line or was the guy from manhattan nest?

  • Reply Nicole August 20, 2015 at 3:07 pm

What are those circular side tables in the photograph of the PS collection rug and corner sofa?

  • Reply jen August 30, 2015 at 1:26 pm

I bought a bunch of the Sittning yesterday and am quite disappointed in the glazing. There are white swirls in the glaze on all of them. I’m trying to embrace them as individual markings, but it just seems like sloppy work to me. It’s sad, given how lovely the collection is. Did you notice this when you saw the pieces?

I also picked up a few of the acacia trays. These you should have a close look at–they vary widely in quality of finish work. Some had rough edges, and others had smooth edges. Some of the wood combinations were less pleasing than others.
