HOUSE: New Mexico #1

Bedroom lighting.

When I posted my after photos of the bedroom, I hadn’t yet installed the bedside lighting. That’s OK, though, because really—these Eduard sconces from Schoolhouse Electric deserve their own post.

I went back and forth between the antique black and natural brass finishes, but ultimately decided to go with the brass because of the brightness I knew it would add to the room. I’m so happy with my choice! The brass has already started to get a little bit of patina, and they’re just going to get nicer and nicer with age.

I’ve used a lot of light fixtures from Schoolhouse over the years (beginning with the Truman sconces in my former Newburgh bathroom), and every time I open a package from them, I know it’s going to be an exhilarating feeling. I always gasp, because their fixtures always looks better in person than they do online. Their craftsmanship is top-notch, without fail.

And yes, in case you’re wondering, the Eduard sconces also come in a hardwired version! That’s not an option for me because I’m in a rental, but I’d run wires for these babies in a heartbeat if I was a homeowner. The cord is nice, though—it’s heavyweight and fabric-covered.

I put 20W bulbs in both fixtures, and the amount of light they emit is perfect. The reflection of the light off the brass produces a really beautiful, warm glow. I tried to get a decent photo of them in use, but since I suck at taking pictures in low light, you’ll just have to use your imagination.

My Eduard sconces were kindly supplied by Schoolhouse Electric, for which I am extremely grateful. They didn’t ask me to write this post, but I’d do pretty much anything for them because they rule and I love them.

The sconces are gorgeous (the whole room is) but it seems a little weird to not even acknowledge that they cost nearly $500 (!). I know you have a relationship with Schoolhouse Electric, but do you have any suggestions for a more typical rental-with-a-roommate budget?

The bedroom and living room make me so happy. It’s amazing the difference that just some paint makes. Not that that’s all you did, especially in the bedroom. It’s looking great!

Love it. I may have to steal some ideas for my own room from this!

I love the look of Schoolhouse Electric products and finally ordered a sconce from them last year. After waiting 8 weeks with no updates or indication it would take that long to ship, I contacted them to check on the status. They were apologetic but had no estimate of when I would receive it. A quick internet search shows this is happens quite a bit. I cancelled the order and got a refund. I would love to buy some of their products but who can wait that long? Maybe if you’re buying something a year before you’ll actually need it…

Man, that’s a bummer! I’ve actually never had to wait more than a month or so—which I expected, as they do have a long lead time since everything is custom. Maybe I’ve just gotten lucky. :\

The brass is perfect and what a transformation! It’s amazing how the right choices can overcome the most daunting obstacles.

By the way, do you have any recommendations for a moving company to do another NYC to NM exodus?

Long time reader, first time commenter. I just have to say that I think you do sponsored posts the best out of any blog I know of/follow. Both this and the ones you have done with IKEA really seem to fit what you do here, and convey good information in a format that seems genuine and thought through. Kudos.

The brass definitely added that extra texture in the room. Great choice.

Ahhh…enjoy the low watt bulbs while you’re young!

I think my favorite part of all of these refreshes is that they are done in a space with builder beige carpet. You take your spaces so far that the carpet fades into the background, which is amazing. Well done, you!
