I Want This + I Love the Internet

HELP. I need patio chairs!

Outdoor chairs - doorsixteen.com

When I can’t find what I’m looking for online or in stores, I ask for help. Whether it’s pillows (I still haven’t bought one, but I’m getting closer) or pill organizers (yes, I got one, and yes, it’s great—update on that soon), there’s always someone out there who has magically already found exactly what I’m looking for. I love the internet.

So, I have a small back porch, and I’d like to have a couple of lounge chairs out there to hang out on. I know I should have started looking earlier in the season, but I didn’t, and now I can’t find anything I like that meets my needs.

The two chairs in the above photo are pretty much exactly what I’m looking for. The one on the left is from Article, and the one on the right is from Target. Both are, of course, sold out. ARGH.

Aside from their good looks, the best thing about these chairs is the scale. The footprint of both is only about 2′ square, which is perfect for my little porch. Anything bigger than that and it’s going to be an ugly squeeze.

Here’s my list of requirements:
– Natural material (rattan/wicker/seagrass)
– Lounge-y in style, not a dining chair
– Roughly ~24″ wide/deep
– Price per chair under $150
– IN STOCK and ready to ship/pick up

I’ve already looked at EVERYTHING at CB2, West Elm, IKEA, Overstock, Wayfair, AllModern, etc.—there’s gotta be a secret source out there I’ve never heard of!

There are tons of vintage rattan hoop chairs on eBay and Etsy, but they’re too pricey for me. I need a budget option. Also, I like that these newer chairs have a ton of coating to protect them from water damage—my porch is covered, but it’s not enclosed.

Help?

UPDATE: Chairs! Chairs! Chairs! (Thank you so much for your help!!)

West Elm has a petite lounge chair (the Huron Small Lounge Chair), but it’s not cheap (thought it’s on sale at the moment)!

These chairs from Terrain are pretty cute, but they don’t come in a natural rattan color. The black looks nice! Can you tell that I am procrastinating on getting my work done today? http://www.shopterrain.com/outdoor-chairs-lounge/all-weather-wicker-open-weave-side-chair

    • Anna @ D16 June 7, 2017 at 11:31 am

Those are very pretty! Much too pricey for my budget, though, sadly.

    • Anna @ D16 June 7, 2017 at 11:47 am

They’re very nice looking (I considered them even though they’re not very lounge-y!), but sadly out of stock and not available to ship!

    • kate oates June 7, 2017 at 11:51 am

There are still some available at your local Target stores in Albuquerque.

    • Anna @ D16 June 7, 2017 at 11:53 am

I’ve checked every store here for both Target chairs! They’re out of stock everywhere. The online info isn’t an accurate reflection of in-store stock, alas. (If you saw two of either style in person here, of course, please let me know where!)

  • Reply Ali June 7, 2017 at 11:47 am

Not natural material AND over budget, but very close style-wise. They have a blue on sale that is almost on budget. https://www.cb2.com/ixtapa-white-lounge-chair/s271391

    • Anna @ D16 June 7, 2017 at 11:48 am

Yeah, I looked at those, but the white ones are too expensive and the blue ones just aren’t my style (and honestly, I kind of feel like that’s an exorbitant price for a PVC chair…). So close, yet so far! Hahah.

  • Reply marie June 7, 2017 at 11:48 am

If you’re willing to wait, I think the Article chair is just back-ordered.
11 weeks, though, so that puts it at the tail end of summer.

    • Anna @ D16 June 7, 2017 at 11:50 am

I definitely want something for this summer, yes! I’m only looking at stuff that’s in stock and ready to ship.

    • Anna @ D16 June 7, 2017 at 11:54 am

I have, yes! Unfortunately, they don’t seem to carry anything that meets my list of requirements.

    • Anna @ D16 June 7, 2017 at 11:57 am

Very pretty! If only it were less deep. Sigh!

    • Anna @ D16 June 7, 2017 at 12:00 pm

Hmmm. I wonder if that size description is incorrect? They mention an ottoman in the product name, but there’s none pictured. Maybe the listed dimensions include the missing ottoman? Probably not, though—I’m guessing the title is an error. Hmmmm.

    • Anna @ D16 June 7, 2017 at 12:03 pm

Answering myself here: Yeah, that’s the measurement for the chair alone. The description on Overstock lists the dimensions for the chair separate from the ottoman. Sadly, 31.5″ is too deep for my tiny porch.

    • kate oates June 7, 2017 at 12:05 pm

There are contradicting product questions and answers below the product info. I don’t know…

  • Reply Rachel June 7, 2017 at 12:00 pm

Are you familiar with the Solair chair from Montreal designer Lahance? It’s not a natural material but they’re really durable, easy to clean and come in lots of fun colours. Plus it’s a great way to celebrate Canada’s 150 birthday. https://themodernshop.com/products/solair-motel-chair-by-iel-lachance?variant=108639002

    • Anna @ D16 June 7, 2017 at 12:05 pm

They’re so cute, Rachel, but plastic gets VERY hot and uncomfortable on New Mexico’s 100ºF summer days.

  • Reply Molly | ABA June 7, 2017 at 12:09 pm

Sliiightly larger than 24 inches, but you can buy these online and shipping is only $59 (I put in an Albuquerque zip code.) http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/00343545/ Thoughts?

Now I’m debating them for my patio… 🙂

    • Anna @ D16 June 7, 2017 at 12:12 pm

GREAT find, Molly!! Funny—when I saw those on the IKEA site, I assumed they were much larger and didn’t even click to check the dimensions. They’re definitely going on my list. Thank you so much for pointing them out! I love that the cushion is included.

    • Dana June 7, 2017 at 12:18 pm

Look at these in person if you can…I did and found them to be uncomfortably short

    • Anna @ D16 June 7, 2017 at 12:19 pm

Well, that’s a bummer. There are no IKEA stores in New Mexico (a grave tragedy, I know), so I appreciate you letting me know!

    • Tricia June 7, 2017 at 12:26 pm

Wow. I checked delivery on one of these chairs and it was $349.

    • Anna @ D16 June 7, 2017 at 12:15 pm

Hahahaha, I was looking at that first set for so long last night and wishing I could will it into being juuuuust a bit smaller.

  • Reply Staci June 7, 2017 at 12:30 pm

I mean, while you continue your search, you could just go full restaurant, and then craigslist them next spring when you can make your wicker dreams come true. https://www.webstaurantstore.com/bfm-seating-ms21ctn-madrid-outdoor-indoor-stackable-tan-synthetic-wicker-and-aluminum-arm-chair/163MS21CTN.html

See my reply to Laura above—unfortunately, plastic is a dealbreaker for me.

    • Sarah June 7, 2017 at 2:32 pm

Shoot! I think I posted my comment right after Laura posted hers and I didn’t see it (I also failed to notice that the chair was plastic – I am winning at today, clearly.).

  • Reply Kim June 7, 2017 at 2:34 pm

Anthropologie Pari rattan chair? Slightly too deep, not available til June 27, but $98. I didn’t think you could buy a pair of socks for $98 at Anthro.
    https://www.anthropologie.com/shop/pari-rattan-chair

    • Anna @ D16 June 7, 2017 at 6:13 pm

HAHAHA!! Kim, that’s so funny—I was looking at that chair last night and wondering what’s wrong with it because it’s so inexpensive (especially by Anthropologie standards). I wonder if it’s horribly uncomfortable or something? I wish they carried them in-store here in ABQ so I could check them out in person. They are definitely gorgeous!

    • Beth June 7, 2017 at 7:13 pm

Read the comments on the chair, only one negative.

    • Anna @ D16 June 7, 2017 at 6:08 pm

Thanks, Michele—they look nice, but plastic is a no-go for me. It’s just too uncomfortable in the heat here.

    • Maria June 9, 2017 at 1:20 pm

I was suggesting the Acapulco chair, too,, but instead plastic weaving, you could try to do a natural weave yourself? Because, those Acapulco chairs are just beautifully simple and comfy.

    • Anna @ D16 June 9, 2017 at 1:45 pm

I *definitely* don’t have the skills to work with caning (it’s much harder than it looks)—and considering how expensive Acapulco chairs are, that seems like a big investment in something I’d be irreparably taking apart.

  • Reply Raq June 7, 2017 at 3:27 pm

Not SUPER lounge-y, and may have already been mentioned in the comments that I’m too lazy to read, but:

    • Raq June 7, 2017 at 3:30 pm

Nevermind! I see these are a no-go! But I’m DETERMINED on your behalf, at this point.

    • Raq June 7, 2017 at 3:44 pm

I know the word “dining” is in the product name, but:
      https://www.cb2.com/sophia-black-dining-chair/s377458

Ok, I’m done for now. I promise.

    • Anna @ D16 June 7, 2017 at 6:10 pm

Hi Raq, thank you! I appreciate the efforts, really. 😉 I definitely want to stick with a natural material like rattan or wicker, though. I know plastic and resin are sometimes more durable, but in the hot sun here synthetics really are unbearable.

Throwing my hat into the ring:
    https://www.athome.com/vienna-5-piece-wicker-chair-and-ottoman-set/124186674.html
Pros: wicker, at a store in ABQ (would have to call to see if they’re in stock), comes with an ottoman that stores under the chair, in budget
Cons: definitely not as good as the original ones you’re looking for but not *tragically* fugly, website gives no indication of measurements so another thing to call and ask about but based on the ottoman storage I’d guess it’s on the petite side.

    • Anna @ D16 June 7, 2017 at 6:07 pm

Thanks, Ali! They’re not awful—I wouldn’t want the ottomans or the table, but it may be worth stopping in to that store (I’ve seen it before, but have never been inside) to see if they have anything I like. Thanks again!

    • Anna @ D16 June 7, 2017 at 6:28 pm

Gosh. These are so cheap…I wonder how well wicker takes spray paint? Hmmm.

    • AB June 7, 2017 at 6:35 pm

I have spray painted wicker and it takes it very well! Just a few light coats.

    • Anna @ D16 June 7, 2017 at 6:36 pm

Thanks, AB!! Did you just use that Rust-Oleum spray paint that says it’s for patio furniture?

    • AB June 7, 2017 at 6:49 pm

I just used Valspar! It was a covered porch but no probs.

    • Anna @ D16 June 7, 2017 at 6:49 pm

      Great. Thank you so much!

    • Anna @ D16 June 7, 2017 at 6:35 pm

HMMMMM. They do look a LOT better when they’re styled. I guess I should go in and check them out in person! Thanks for the tip, Ali. 🙂

    • Ali June 7, 2017 at 6:56 pm

Oh, that IS an improvement! Fingers crossed that they will be in stock and the right size 🙂

  • Reply Michele June 7, 2017 at 7:00 pm

One more thought; these are pretty bright, but since the seat is made from woven fabric it might not be too tough to switch out for a neutral? Good luck!

    • Lori June 7, 2017 at 8:36 pm

Sadly, I have sat in them, and I wouldn’t call them comfortable. But boy, they do look cool!

    • Anna @ D16 June 8, 2017 at 7:41 am

Thanks Michele, yeah, they look nice, but I really don’t want the discomfort of metal on my body in 100º weather. 😉 They’re also out of my budget.

Over budget, but sending in case you’d consider buying one, not two! http://www.elsiegreen.com/products/3303-winged-rattan-accent-chair.aspx

    • Anna @ D16 June 8, 2017 at 7:42 am

Yes, it’s very pretty, but I definitely want two matching chairs.

    • Anna @ D16 June 8, 2017 at 7:44 am

Oh, it’s lovely—sadly, though, with an additional $140 for shipping (!!!) they become totally unaffordable for me.

Hmmm…not strictly an outdoor chair, but the materials work and the price is right: https://www.urbanoutfitters.com/shop/ryerson-chair?category=SEARCHRESULTS&color=025

    • Anna @ D16 June 8, 2017 at 7:44 am

Thanks, Lori—but I’m definitely looking for a lounge-y chair, not a dining or desk chair.

  • Reply Nina June 7, 2017 at 11:37 pm

I have had the misfortune of falling in love with my neighbor’s IKEA Hogsten lounge chairs which are discontinued. Perhaps you can use your ambassador status to convince IKEA to re-introduce them before I do something foolish. Good luck with your search.

    • Anna @ D16 June 8, 2017 at 7:45 am

Haha, I’d need to be something much more important than a Brand Ambassador in order to make something like that happen. 😉

    • Anna @ D16 June 8, 2017 at 7:46 am

(If it makes you feel any better, HOGSTEN chairs are plastic—I don’t know if that’s a deal-breaker for you, but it is for me.)

    • Nina June 8, 2017 at 4:44 pm

Haha. Well, if they know what’s good for them they should keep their eyes peeled for any suggestions coming from you 😉 No, I didn’t realize they were plastic. What a shame. (I have only seen the chairs from a distance.)

    http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/40332682/

    • Anna @ D16 June 8, 2017 at 7:48 am

Yes, IKEA is always the first place I check. 🙂 Unfortunately, they don’t carry anything that meets my list of requirements other than MASTHOLMEN, which is apparently very uncomfortable due to the short seat. I think that’s what makes the difference in the chairs in my photo—the shape allows for body depth without increasing the footprint.

    • Cussot June 8, 2017 at 2:01 pm

Just let me clarify here – I find the MASTHOLMEN seat pretty comfortable, but it’s very low. I’m short, so I like it.

    • Anna @ D16 June 8, 2017 at 2:25 pm

Thanks, Cussot! I’m average height (5’6″), but I definitely want something that’s more of a lounge chair than something you’d sit in to eat. Where do you think they fall on that spectrum?

    • Cussot June 8, 2017 at 4:30 pm

Definitely lounge-y – you couldn’t use it as a dining chair because it’s too low and sloped backward. Kind of like a beach chair.

  • Reply megan June 8, 2017 at 1:27 am

This is not helpful for you at all – but with all my looking I came across the Solair chair (plastic) and now I want them for my deck! http://retrorenovation.com/2013/05/21/solair-chairs-retro-patio-chairs/

    • Anna @ D16 June 8, 2017 at 7:49 am

If you live somewhere hot, be forewarned that plastic chairs get REALLY hot in the summer!

    • Meg June 8, 2017 at 10:27 am

We just moved from NYC to Seattle – I’m finding mildew on my IKEA rattan lounge chair – so I’m thinking we need more durable, water proof outdoor furniture. I stupidly put a 1940s bamboo chair outside and it’s pretty much ruined! Sadly. I lived in Tempe, AZ as a kid (and college student) so I totally get the plastic (and metal!) problem!

    • Anna @ D16 June 8, 2017 at 10:29 am

I hear you, Meg! Fortunately, I have a mudroom right off of the back porch where I can easily stash my (future) chairs if they need protection in the event of a heavy rain/wind/hail situation. Having a covered porch also helps immensely!

    • Anna @ D16 June 8, 2017 at 7:49 am

Thanks, Rebecca—not my taste at all, though, unfortunately.

    • Anna @ D16 June 8, 2017 at 7:51 am

Thanks, Molly! Really not my taste, though—and resin is a deal-breaker. I’m a natural fiber kind of gal when it comes to this stuff. 😉

    • Anna @ D16 June 8, 2017 at 10:09 am

That’s a really beautiful chair, but I’m a little confused about the dimensions listed. There’s no way it’s only 13″ deep, right? That would make it impossible to sit in. I love the way these style of chairs look, but the nature of the design typically makes them about 36″ or so in depth. I’ll try contacting the company to ask. Thanks, Stephanie!

    • Stephanie Zell June 8, 2017 at 2:44 pm

It does seem quite off. I was trying to tell the difference between the 36 and the 45 chairs.

    • Anna @ D16 June 8, 2017 at 3:50 pm

They replied to me on Twitter—the SEAT is 13″ deep. I’ve asked them for an overall measurement of the entire depth!

It’s a stretch but try searching eBay for the ones you really want but are out of stock. My boyfriend always finds things that are out of stock in store but people are selling brand new on eBay. I don’t entirely understand it but he has successfully got me a pair of shoes and jeans.

    • Anna @ D16 June 8, 2017 at 11:08 pm

Believe me, I’ve tried! Unfortunately, furniture is very expensive to ship for individuals (as opposed to companies that use big freight trucks and have multiple warehouses), so a $100 chair can immediately become a $200 chair from shipping costs alone.

    • Anna @ D16 June 8, 2017 at 11:09 pm

(But yes, eBay is great for discontinued items that can be sent by parcel! I’ve also bought shoes and jeans that way.)

Thanks Sue, but it’s really important to me to have something made of natural fibers, not synthetic.

    • Anna @ D16 June 9, 2017 at 8:07 am

Thanks, Rachel! Unfortunately, the shipping expense when ordering from sources like Etsy, Chairish, etc. wind up adding hundreds of extra dollars to the cost. That Chairish chair winds up being close to $500 with shipping, and there’s only one chair! (It’s also really important for me to have a natural fiber chair, which rules out most options from places like World Market and so forth…)

    • Rachel June 9, 2017 at 8:32 am

Ouch! I hear ya re: shipping. If I see anything else with natural materials (and not outright theft of original designs) I’ll send them to you!

Yes! Free shipping. I just ordered two for $170 total. I know they aren’t in stock, but maybe they’ll ship early…

    • Anna @ D16 June 9, 2017 at 8:39 am

Thanks, Dana! I had considered those, but several of the older reviews (present in Google reviews, but now removed from their site) complain about poor quality over time and a very short seat depth, both deal-breakers for me as I want something that’s good for lounging.

I’m seriously emotionally invested in this…I’ve been checking daily to find out if you’ve made a decision, HA.

  • Reply Meg June 9, 2017 at 9:35 am

I implore you to buy these for your dining room (not for outside) because they are so cool! May not be in the best shape and again I’m totally off track with your requirements but . . . https://albuquerque.craigslist.org/fuo/6153124562.html

    • Anna @ D16 June 9, 2017 at 9:37 am

Haha, I bookmarked those the day they were listed even though I have no use for them. My dining table is tiny, and I’m happy with my Bertoia chairs. 🙂

These aren’t super stylish, but look really comfy and inoffensive. With the extra 10% off coupon today they are pretty close to budget. Thanks for providing a welcome distraction from the news!!!

    • Anna @ D16 June 9, 2017 at 1:50 pm

Hi Michele, this link just redirects me to Target’s home page, but I’ve looked at every single chair in their website…nothing that’s in-stock meets my needs (or my style). I wish they had something!

    • Anna @ D16 June 9, 2017 at 1:54 pm

Maybe this is what you were linking to?

Unfortunately, they’re resin—and I really have my heart set on a natural fiber. I’d also have to ditch the ottomans since they wouldn’t fit on my porch. I really need/want something more like the photos in my post. Thank you for looking, though!

  • Reply Diane June 9, 2017 at 3:55 pm

The Luna chair from Article in your photo now says there are two in stock. Maybe a return? Would they lie about this???

    • Anna @ D16 June 9, 2017 at 4:05 pm

OMFG!!!!!! I’m not asking any questions. I ordered them, and we’ll see what happens. THANK YOU!!!!!!!

Sometimes the stars align. Hope it works out!

  • Reply Debs June 9, 2017 at 3:57 pm

Hi Anna – How is your macramé coming along? Could you think about DIY-ing a chair frame?

    • Anna @ D16 June 9, 2017 at 3:59 pm

Is that even possible?? I could see how someone (not me, but someone with more experience than making a simple planter hanger) could make a seat, but how would a macrame chair frame work? Would it be dipped in resin or something, like the Carbon chair?

    • Debs June 9, 2017 at 4:28 pm

Oh I’m an idiot.. ! I meant macramé a seat for an existing frame, I’m sorry. (It’s late here, and I spent all last night watching the UK election results coming in). Macramé seated aluminium chairs seem popular, but I like the ones done on hoop chair frames or wooden frames. Like this, but in black & neutral?

They’re beautiful, Debs, but chair caning and weaving is waaaaaay beyond my skillset. Also, FWIW, rope and cane is actually pretty expensive. Even if I had those kinds of skills, it could easily add a couple hundred bucks in materials to the project.

I have been checking back to see whether anyone’s found the unicorn, and found these on my local Craigslist: https://austin.craigslist.org/fuo/6151446013.html

Seriously, if you want them, I’ll buy them and ship them to you.

    • Anna @ D16 June 10, 2017 at 1:26 pm

Thank you so much for offering to do that, Lori! They’re too far beyond my budget, though, and the shipping would be very expensive. Maybe you know someone local who could use them? They’d be beautiful indoors, too.

  • Reply Lori June 9, 2017 at 11:28 pm

(And I know, they’re budget breakers unless the sellers are willing to negotiate, but I have concluded from many internet searches that nobody even does real wicker anymore in a contemporary style.)

Sorry dont know if u already know. The,chairs, from Article aee in stock. Exactly 2,left. Hurry…

    • Anna @ D16 June 10, 2017 at 9:03 am

Thanks, Emmy! Diane (above) noticed that yesterday and alerted me, so I ordered a pair immediately. I received an order confirmation email but they’re still showing two in stock, so…well, hopefully the whole thing wasn’t an error. Crossing my fingers that I have two chairs on my porch in a few weeks! 🙂

Probably to expensive and I’m not even sure if you can get it in America but look how pretty it is. It’s from the danish brand House Doctor. Unfortunately I don’t have a garden or even a balcony. http://www.littlethings.dk/shop/moebler/stole/retro-lounge-stol-house-doctor/

Ikea. I just sat in a great one the other day, in the UK each is 35 pounds.

  • Reply Karoline June 12, 2017 at 5:31 am

I know this is technically “kids furniture” but it’s dimensions are close to your required ones! (I was checking on rattan furniture for my son and saw it) https://m.landofnod.com/antoinette-rattan-navy-kids-chair/s379688 And I also found this one slightly over budget: https://www.etsy.com/listing/501931358/vintage-rattan-hoop-chair?utm_campaign=shopping_us_KidWildCollective_sfc_osa&utm_medium=cpc&utm_source=google&utm_custom1=0&utm_content=11592436&gclid=CL-886KZuNQCFQUIaQodKWkGwA

These are just what I imagine you with, however I have no idea if they are available in the US and how much the £399.00 converts to in dollars but they are really rather wonderful

Check out solair chairs or, as they are also know, motel chairs. Inexpensive (I paid $100 Cdn each for mine) super comfortable and super cool to boot. Designed in the 60’s and still look great.

    • Anna @ D16 June 13, 2017 at 9:00 am

Hi Carolyn, thanks—I like the way Solair chairs look, but plastic is very uncomfortable to sit on in New Mexico heat. (I already bought chairs, btw—check my most recent post! 🙂 )

Sorry if someone already suggested this, but have you seen these? Love their look: https://www.target.com/p/latigo-3-pc-rattan-patio-chat-set-threshold-153/-/A-51267971

    • Anna @ D16 June 15, 2017 at 2:55 pm

Thanks, Erika! A few folks did suggest this set, but 35″ is much too deep for my tiny space.

  • Reply heather June 22, 2017 at 8:46 am

I had the same size requirements as you and I just bought 2 of these… They are resin, however, they are dirt cheap so I also bought two really cute black and white striped seat cushions for $12/each.

As an additional option, there is this, which comes with a seat as well.

There should be DIYs how to make wire or and rattan patio chairs. The prices of outdoor are egregiously ridiculous.

    • Anna @ D16 April 9, 2018 at 8:24 pm

There are plenty of videos of the process of weaving rattan on YouTube. This is something that goes beyond “DIY”—it’s an art that requires years of acquired skill and many hours of labor to produce a single chair. The person who made your favorite “egregiously ridiculous”-ly priced rattan chair probably earned no more than a dollar or two per hour…at most. But by all means, make your own!
