NYC hair people?

I need a professional haircut, because I look like this:

I used to go to Jane at Grace Heaven, and then I went to Simone at Laicale for a few years. I love them both (and would recommend either of them in a heartbeat), but I feel like I need to try someone new. That said, the fear of trying someone new has lead me to spend the past two years cutting my own hair—with thinning shears. Chop, chop, chop, chop. No rhyme or reason, just hacking away. I like looking disheveled, but there’s a limit (see above photo).

NYC people: Who do you recommend? I like stylists who don’t mind taking sculptural liberties when cutting. I’m pretty fearless when it comes to hair (though I do require having bangs; I can’t exist without them, but they can be short-short-short or long), but the stylist must understand my hair icons (Lydia Lunch, Debbie Harry, Exene Cervenka) and not try to give me a soccer-mom cut.

I’ve been going to Emilee at Soon Beauty Lab (http://soonbeautylab.com) for a few years now and she’s great. She introduced me to bangs and I don’t think I’m going back anytime soon. And I’m sure she can handle what you’re looking for.

Kellianne at Space. She’s in town one week a month. Tell her Bostonista sent you. She will definitely get your style references, promise.

I wish I had the courage to cut my own hair, and I admire folks who do. I came this close ->

Sasha, SO MANY people have recommended various stylists at Soon to me over the years! Thank you for the extra push, and for Emilee’s name.

bostinista, thank you!!! Do you know (roughly) what Kellianne charges? I’m trying to keep my budget under $150. (And is she fearless??)

Ginger Walker at Aveda on W B’way…she’s a Master Stylist there. She’s a doll and VERY talented! You will not look like a soccer mom and she has done some cuts on me that had fellow stylists gathering around to watch her do it.

I need a hair cut too! But I’m too scared it will look horrible, but i’m sure it will look better then what i’m doing. hack hack hack…

  • Reply b. ostinista March 21, 2008 at 8:22 am

Not sure what she charges, actually. I’d call the salon. But yes, fearless.

  • Reply ortolan March 21, 2008 at 8:28 am

With all of that said- does anyone have any suggestions in Maine???

  • Reply Janelle March 21, 2008 at 8:38 am

I always go to Meg at Salon Vijin. It’s such a nice place and I bought in a picture once and ever since then, I just say, “I would like more bangs or choppier.” And she somehow understands what I want!

Which reminds me I’d got to get my hair cut.

I went to Soon for years until Amy, my stylist, left the salon. I now go visit her in Williamsburg at her new digs, Deluxe (www.deluxewilliamsburg.com), to let her work her magic. She cuts for under $80, if I remember correctly.

I love love love my stylist, Yoko and the salon itself. It’s a super tiny, mellow place in Alphabet City owned by a husband and wife who just moved here one year ago from Tokyo. My Japanese friend turned me onto Yoko. She consults with you before the cut, figures out what will look best on you, then wash, then cut! It’s called Salon Shizen (Nature) http://www.nyshizen.com/ English is definitely a second language but you can show her pictures, she’ll chat with you and they love American costumers. Super cute! They have a kitty, and live above their salon. Nice design too.

No advice. I just have to admit that before I read any of this post, I saw the picture and liked your hair. But then… I cut my hair with an exacto knife, and have a recently developed love for messyhair (on me) so what do I know?

I do like that photo, though. You look like a rockstar. In an archive.

I went to Ellen at Soon Beauty Lab and really liked her.

  • Reply Adam March 21, 2008 at 10:39 am

Wow, I haven’t sen your hair that long in years! I can offer no advice as to who to go to, unless you come visit me, my stylist is an absolute genius! You have been doing a good job on your own, I must say.

If there is any correlation between collateral design and haircuts, Deluxe in Williamsburg gets my vote.

  • Reply shanny March 21, 2008 at 1:39 pm

Thank you so much for this post! I’ve been in NY for 1.5 years now and have yet to find a stylist I like. I live in Greenpoint, so may just have to check out Deluxe. And I have to say that I adore your top in that photo!

Wow, everybody!! Thank you for all the suggestions! I feel like getting a dozen haircuts. 🙂 This is so great… I’m no longer feeling terrified of my next cut.

I’ll post the results, of course!

  • Reply Anna at D16 March 21, 2008 at 2:42 pm

p.s. Kelly, I love Salon Shizen’s portfolio!!! Everyone looks like they just crawled out bed and haven’t gone near a straightening iron…or even a hair dryer.

(And $65 for a cut?! I can go every month!)

  • Reply kristin March 21, 2008 at 2:46 pm

I love Patty at Soon Beauty Lab on West 22nd Street.
She’s amazing, incredibly funny, and always makes great suggestions.

I’ve lived in NYC for nine years and she’s the first and only stylist that I’ve ever gone back to.

  • Reply jennifer in sf March 21, 2008 at 3:33 pm

Jeez. I feel like flying to NYC and going to Salon Shizen, now. $65!!

  • Reply jana March 21, 2008 at 3:59 pm

Oh, I don´t trust anyone, when it comes to hairdressers :). I always had to bring a hat to the salon. They are all smiles and everything, but then just scald you and cut everything out of your had and don´t listen to what you are saying. I prefer cutting my hair myself. My husband also never knows that I had my hair cut or died, co it´s really not worth the money :-).

  • Reply jana March 21, 2008 at 4:01 pm

Sorry, I made some mistakes in that comment, it´s because I am a little drunk.

  • Reply kellyr March 21, 2008 at 6:49 pm

Yes, the price is perfect! Yikes, this only reminds me, I need to get a cut ASAP. Can’t wait to see your new cut, where ever you decide. Keep posted!

  • Reply MrsLimestone March 22, 2008 at 12:38 pm

I go to a salon in Brooklyn so I don’t have anyone to recommend but good luck. Finding someone who understands your inner hair is tough.

And Im feeling very cheap after reading these comments – I would be cutting my own hair too if a cut cost $150!

  • Reply inez March 23, 2008 at 3:55 am

Don’t cut it off !! Your hair is just great like this ! Or am I too late ??

  • Reply sulu-design March 23, 2008 at 2:56 pm

Mark at Salon 7 on East 7th between 1st and A (I think) always did a great job when I lived in NYC. He’ll understand your icons. I believe he used to cut Siouxsie’s hair (as in, the one who sang with the Banshees).

you know i’m right there with you. i’ve got my own appointment set for april 1st and have moved past fear and anxiousness and am now feeling impatient and very excited for a change. can’t wait to see what you do. x!

  • Reply tiny cricket April 3, 2008 at 5:56 pm

i know that this response is really late, but i love paige, my stylist in poughkeepsie. everybody at her salon, collage, is trained at bumble and bumble. she’s great…and a haircut is only $45! i know it’s not exactly in nyc, but it’s a lot closer to newburgh! i used to get my hair cut all the time at twodo salon on the upper west and hoshi coupe, but the trek was just too much for me after the first year in the hudson valley.
    good luck with your search!

Anyone at either outpost of Soon Beauty Lab. They are all great.

  • Reply Anna at D16 June 6, 2009 at 11:27 pm

joanna: This post is over a year old! If you go to the vanity category, you can see various haircut photos and such.
